Divorce

Post by momat » Mon Dec 29, 2008 9:31 am

Probably a "daft " question, but do Divorce Papers tell the reason the couple are divorcing ?
I have a couple who divorced in 1948 (found it listed on NAS) but need to know if it is worth while paying for the document as there is no way I can sight it from afar.

Cheers,
Maureen

Hi Maureen,
I have no experience with divorce papers as recent as the one you mention, but I have some from the 19th century that are a goldmine of information! They contain the statement of the plaintiff and all the sordid details of why that person is suing for divorce, along with statements from witnesses, etc.

Regards,
Sarah

Hi Maureen
I have seen a recent-ish one from the 1970s, that does mention the reasons(s) but no "sordid details"; maybe depends on the circumstances if the breakdown of the marriage.

It was quite an informative document which confirmed a few facts and shed light on a few other things. It was only a couple of pages long, but again, this may depend on the circumstances.

Best things to do would be to contact NAS and ask for an estimate; if it is under 5 pages long it should cost about £2.50 based on the prices last time I was there.

Best wishes
Lesley
