For absolutely no reason (because i know it !) i did a search for the marriage of my James Donaldson and Isobel Moggach (Isabel ect)

All Resources
If i do a search for Isobel (or Isabel) Moggach - Marriage - Scotland - it comes up with the result in 1802.
If i do the same search with James Donaldson there are no results for this marriage but then if i go back and put the marriage year in the search it comes up
Results that appear are both in the IGI if that makes a difference.
Just wondered why this happens ?

Hi Tracey:

I can't get on to IGI at the moment, despite having tried several logins.

Part of the explanation is just that it IS the IGI!

I rather think that there may be some error in their index, or in the transcription of James' name, which may result in too many hits for display. By adding in 1802, you are narrowing down the results list, so making it available for display.

I'll try again later to see if I can narrow it down, but IGI/Ancestry products like to give you 'more' so a lot of their indexes and their practices would not fly in other informational databases.

That's why you often go through a list, and wonder how something so far off what you entered, pops up!

This also (in my opinion) creates a rich impression of 'We've had xxx million hits/matches/entries/records' - this is seen when you find 5 or 6 entries for the same gr-gr-grandfather in a results list.

So we are getting different results ?

I see what you mean on the page where it says all sources 74 (that's just what's shown on that page and your right it isn't there ). But if you scroll down to the bottom of the IGI list and click on over 25 it gives over 200 hits.

Same with Pedigree resource file although it shows 25 there are actually 56 results. Only the first 25 results of each category are shown on that page and they add up to 74.
