Some opinions please

Post by Maxie » Mon Jan 05, 2009 5:54 pm

Hi everyone.

Thanks for all the help with my previous McGregor problem!

I was hoping to get some opinions on a new one! I started doing research on my dad's family last year and have managed to get alot about his mother's family, but have been having no luck whatsoever on his father's side - the Wood family. Unfortunately the fractures within this part of the family are deeper than the Grand Caynon! - meaning that there is no one I can really ask about this.

So, I have the marriage certificate of my great-grandparents in Glasgow in 1927. Adam Wood, a Chauffeur aged 19 marries Mary Croall, a sewing machinist, aged 18. My problem concerns the Croalls (however i've got no where with the Woods either!)

When talking to my gran. she didn't know much about my grandfather's family except that Mary Croall was born in Belfast, and she was quite certain about it. I thought great brick wall straight away!

So I have tried to find the deaths of Mary's parents who were both dead by the time of her marriage - James Croall, a plumber and Elizabeth M.S Blower - with no luck whatsoever.

With the release of the 1908 birth records I thought I would have a look on the off chance of finding something as I estimated this was when Mary should have been born. And I found a likely match! A Mary Ann Bowler Croall, born 1908 in Glasgow to James Duncan McFee Croall, a Letterpress Printer and Elizabeth M.s Bowler. A few more searches turned up thier marriage and also James' birth.

However I don't know whether to believe this or not. It's not in Ireland, her father's occupation has changed and her mother's maiden surname is different although not by much. I did a quick search on the IGI and found a possible sister to Elizabeth born in Cork in 1874 - which isn't exactly Belfast!!

So do I trust the certificates? I'm inclined towards believing them, but thought a second opinion might help.

Sorry for the long post!

Hi Maxie,
I suppose the marriage cert is crystal clear, and James' occupation couldn't say printer instead of plumber? As you have probably seen, there is a James Croall, Printer, living in Glasgow in 1901 with his wife Elizabeth, born also in Glasgow. I would guess that there is some Belfast connection in the family-- perhaps they lived there for a few years-- and that's how your grandmother got the idea that Mary was born there. Sounds awfully close to the right family!

All the best,
Sarah

There is a death indexed of James D* M* Croll in 1961.

Maxie,

What was James's mother maiden name?

Regards,
Annette

Hi Sarah - it definitely says plumber. But I think you are right it does seem like the right family.

Annette - thanks for finding that, having those middle names was handy! His mother's maiden surname was Barker. But 1961 doesn't make sense with the marriage certificate in 1927 saying that he was dead.

I think that i'll go with the certificates being right, I've already found a few more interesting things!

Thanks

Maxie.

Hi Maxie,

It's possible that the 1961 record that Annette has found is the son or even grandson of James and Elizabeth, although you would need to see the certificates to prove it. SP lists three James D* Cro*ll's born between 1908 and 1961, although none were born in Glasgow City. Playing with the search parameters shows that they were born in 1920, 1941 and 1947.

Best wishes
