Skeivis surname?

Post by StewL » Thu Jan 08, 2009 7:26 am

Hello all
Just got a MC for my uncle Alec and his wife Mattie
Ok Alexander Stewart and Martha McIlroy Skeivis McFadyen, my question is.
Has anyone every come across the Skeivis name, I have done some searching on IGI and SP surname search and it comes up blank.
They were married in 1932 and on the MC it is definately Skeivis, her mothers maiden name, the spelling is repeated twice on the cert and it is the same spelling for both.
Any clues!
Oh, I thought she was born in Ireland but it seems she was born 1910 in Airdrie, just have to wait a couple of years to get her BC

Is it a possiblity that the mother's family were Lithuanian?

If you go to the Lithuanian Global Genealogical Society webpage and look under the list of Lithuanina surnames Skeivis is listed there.

The name does indeed appear to be non-Scottish, whatever the spelling, and there's several; although it's amazing what a bit of distortion and corruption can do.

The origin here is nothing so exotic as Lithuania, however. If the line is traced back a few generations it will be found that they came from another part of the UK, - the marriage record gives the names of the parents of the bride, and their marriage is also on-line .......

Factoring in the area in Scotland, the occupations, and the slightly more specific place of birth in an early census, it's near certain that the move to Scotland was to due to the occupation and the need for this expertise in N Lanarkshire in an expanding industry there.
