Newcomer aboard

Hi one and all, I have just registered on TalkingScot on the advice of a friend and have been browsing thru the forum topics. What a wonderful forum it is.
As a newby on this family tree trail (6 months or so) it has put alot more questions in my head.
One of my Grandfathers is Scottish, while 2 sets of GGrandparents are Scottish and one set Irish.
I am a member of Genes Reunited and noted that someone on the forum mentioned having a not too detailed tree on the GR site. I would like to have the same, as my tree takes a while and recently hasn't been downloading as it used to. But if I don't have all the names of ancestors on the tree doesn't this cut down my chances of getting Hot Matches? And how do I turn my tree details into a GEDCOM file please?
Any advice will be very welcome.

Short answer - yes... it is up to you how many folk you have on your GR tree. More listed = more potetential matches as you have noted.

And how do I turn my tree details into a GEDCOM file please?

All genealogy or family tree software such as "Family Tree Maker", "Legacy" etc can export (and import) GEDCOM files. What software are you using?

I have used GR and got some great contacts.
I wonder if you have "Built your own tree" on GR, in which case perhaps GR can help you. Your query doesn't seen to be covered by their "Help" answers, so maybe you need to e-mail them.

It is possible to export your Genes Reunited tree as a Gedcom file. You can do this by selecting Import/Export gedcom at the bottom of the page.You can then use this in conjunction with a family tree software package to view and edit your tree offline. Some packages may also allow you to print your tree. Your exported tree is compatible with Personal Ancestral File, Family Tree Maker, Family Historian , Roots Magic, Family Tree and Legacy. It should work with most software, but we are currently unable to guarantee this."

As far as hot matches on Gene Reunited are concerned, I would be undully worried:
I have very limited information on GR and get a constant streeam of 'matches' 99% of which bear little resemblance to the people they are supposed to match.
The only match I have had is with my sister!

Welcome to Talking Scot though, this is an excellent places for unravelling mysteries and even demolishing brick walls .

Hi Kiwibird56 and welcome to TS

I use the basic free Lagacy and its dead simple even i can do it !

If you are using Legacy heres what you do
Click on File on the top left hand corner
Scroll down till you see Export to
A box will apper to the right and you will see Gedcom File
Click that
A box will appear and in the right hand corner it will say "Select file name and and start export" click that and where it says "file name" give it a name and click save and thats it you should see your tree being exported to a gecom file !

A big THANK YOU for your warm welcomes , and for the very clear instructions re: GEDCOM files. I went straight onto GR and was able to export/ email a GEDCom file of my tree to me. Then it got a little bit messy. I have the free Legacy software and went into the Help section for importing the GEDCOM file into Legacy, managed that after several attempts -I somehow manage to accidently rename files or lose them
I want to be able to email this onto others so then read up about exporting them from Legacy and because on GR "export" equaled "email" I thought I would be able to email them directly and thought I could put them in a seperate folder. Didn't understand about the "file name", that I could give it another name so was giving it the same name as it had - I must have really confused the computer as well as myself .
Then found Tracy's message and saw I could rename the file and when I did this it worked =D>
Just as well I'm on holiday -been here 2 hours doing this.
One disconcerting thing about the GEDCOM file though is that the names are all out of order and its a bit like trying to read double dutch, not at all like one I received from one of the GR folk which was very clear and helpful explaining the relationships between all the names, correct family groupings and chronologically correct etc etc.
