New NRO up and running

Post by Eileen » Fri Jan 16, 2009 8:28 pm

Hi Folks
I have just come back from the new Edinburgh NRO.
It is very nicely refurbished and the cafe is open.
You no longer need to fill in a form all your details are entered on the system, and you have your own user name and password.
The new search system quite frankly is not up to the old one, no maiden names in searches for births before 1929 and the same for deaths before 1979, not vey helpful if you have a very common name to look for and you can only search in 5 year batches.
I thought I would try out the system with info I had already got in Edinburgh, imagine my surprise when I could not find it.
On finding a birth date I took the marriage date to get the cert info, quess what? no cert.
I gave up there and headed outside and then through to the cafe for a coffee fix.
When I passed through the Dundas room I noticed they were still on the old system, seems only pass holders can use this. When I spoke to the lady there she found my Marriage cert right away but had trouble getting it on new system.
She then told me none of the staff think the new system is any good but when they voiced an opinion were shot down in flames.
The one good thing I'd say is that it is much easier to get printed certs.
You give the cashier some money and she adds it to you name each time you print the money comes of your balance which is displayed on your screen, the printers are at the end of the rows and you just collect, much simplier than before.
There is also a favourites facility which you can add 5 certs to at any one time, good if your not sure you have the right one.
I filled in a form telling them exactly what I thought as did my friend.
All in all a very stressful day with not much success.
If you work out your costs Scotlands People seems a very good deal, although I've no doubt they,ll change that to.
Ah well wine bottlle here I come, better stop ranting now.
Hear from you soon
Eileen

ScotlandsPeople Centre

Post by TAFKAM » Sun Jan 18, 2009 10:31 pm

Hello Eileen,

The first week of the ScotlandsPeople Centre certainly wasn't without its problems!

As with most new software developments the version in use just now is ripe for improvements, and they will be made, I have no doubt about it.

Hope your next visit is far more productive.....!

T :D
On my way, from misery to happiness.

NRO Reply

Post by Eileen » Fri Jan 23, 2009 8:07 pm

Just received this reply from NRO
Thank you for completing one of our customer feedback forms when you visited the ScotlandsPeople Centre last week. We do appreciate people taking the time to make comments/suggestions about the service we provide.

I note your concerns about marriage searches and the 5 year search range. We are aware that these are important issues for our customers and we are planning to make changes later this year to the new the system that will enable customers to input both names for searches prior to 1929 and to make the search range facility similar to the old system.

As regards your unsuccessful search, I wondered if you would mind contacting me about this. With your permission, I would like one of our Family History Officers to try searching on the new software for the record.

I am in the office most days Monday to Friday and can be contacted on 0131 314 4541.
Thanks,

Sounds like they might have had a few complaints and are having to rethink the search system.
Eileen

Hi Eileen
An interesting search at NRH on their new system implied that neither of my children exist.... nor did I ever get married, allegedly.

Having shown the helpful member of staff that nothing was turning up for these events for which I certainly was well acquainted with the details, he said that they had found that some areas had not "come over onto the new system". At least it will be reported and corrected, as he said we were all alive and well on the "old system"!!

It made we wonder what other events I might have been searching for and not found...

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello All,

Yes it makes you wonder if the computer system, they use at Edinburgh, is as good as the old days.

Its about 35 years since i was there, in those days not a computer in sight, yearly index books for births, marriages, and death, for the statuary records, so easy to flick through the books, write down the gross numbers, on a piece of paper, then the assistant tok you to view the actual microfilm.

These books were so simple to search alphabetical order, easy to verify the bad spelling of names, and no missing indexes.

Regards,
Jonn.

How frustrating it must be. Here was I thinking that I would treat myself to a day in there but don't know if my nerves will stand it.
Obviously there will be gremlins in any new system but perhaps they should have a period at a reduced price until things are 'fixed'.
At least there is now a cafe where you can rush to if things get too much. A good grouse with others in the same position does you good :!:

Yes, there is that, and the coffee is decent. But as far as I can see, there is now nowhere to eat your own packed lunch.

Best wishes

This is worrying me. We have just made a booking for a cabin in September so that we can come up to Scotland and I can have a great time researching in Edinburgh.

Does this mean that I will be wasting my time in Edinburgh?
Are there any specific areas where there are problems? Specific years? Specific locations? Does this apply more to one or other of the BMDs?

I was hoping to see elderly relatives and coordinate with the records held in Edinburgh, and I have to be realistic that this may be the last time I may see them. If I wait till next year it probably will be too late.

I presume that the NRO mentioned is the GROS??

Help!

I'm afraid I don't know the answers to your questions. I had found much of what I was looking for during the day, it was only towards the end when my brain was packing in and my mind wandered off to "how others see us" that I went off on a wee detour and looked up my marriage, and then not finding it, tried my kids births, also not there, so all of these are reasonably recent events.

I would hope that by September most of the teething problems will have been sorted out. I suspect too that if you were used to the old system, the new one takes a bit of adjusting to, but if you had not used the old system at all, then there is probably no problem using the new one!

Best wishes
