Divorce

Post by KarieK » Tue Feb 10, 2009 8:05 pm

Hi Everyone
I recently bought a marriage certficate on SP which was very blurry but I did note that there is an oval stamp to the left which states Divorce and the folio number. I wonder if the divorce papers are public accessible and one can request a copy. The marriage took place in 1889 in Leith andthe divorce must have been before 1914 when one party remarried in Australia. Does anyone have any ideas.
Regards, Karen

hi Karen
Have you had a look on the NAS site? See
http://www.nas.gov.uk/guides/divorce.asp
Divorces tend to be held there and you can view them, but you have to go to NAS to see the documents or you may be able to request an estimate for the cost of copying same.

Try the catalogue search here:
http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/
Put in the names and you may be able to find it, if it is there.

Best wishes
Lesley

Lesley,

Just had a look at the NAS catalogue site for the first time. Think I may have found some of my missing relatives--they were in jail!

What fascinating reading even though they are only the catalogue entries! I found one Munro I wouldn't mind knowing more about. He is listed as "collector of Scottish tunes" in 1732.

Also found one will for a William Clerieheu (Clerihew) that I didn't know about. Off to SP to check on that one!

Carol :D
Looking for: Clerihew, Longmuir/Longmore, Chalmers, Milne, Barclay in Newhills,
Munro, Cadenhead, Raitt, Ririe/Reary

Hi Karen,

On ScotlandsPeople, on the webpage where you clicked on the link to view the marriage certificate, there should also have been a red button, leading you to the RCE (entry in the Register of Corrected Entries). The folio number that you saw in the oval stamp should be a volume number and page number for the entry in the RCE book.

On clicking on the red button (cost = 2 credits), you should be able to view the RCE and that should give you a date for the divorce. If that red button is not there (it is missing in some cases), then you should complete a Contact Form on the SP website and they (SP or GROS) should hopefully find the RCE and send you a copy by e-mail. Then the link (red button) should be added to their "to do list", and eventually appear on SP for future users.

All the best,

AndrewP

I love the NAS catalogue. Odd things turn up which you were not expecting....as you have found out! I've found some great leads in there, but of course it really helps if you are then in a position to go and look at the documents, as the content of one document sometimes refers to another and that sometimes leads to something else.

I've been able to fill in quite a bit of background and character for some of my lot through various documents - whether it has been through thier membership of a craft guild, the passing on of pieces of land, through deeds of varying sorts, some letters, cases brought to court through perceived injustices or the occaisional run-in with the law! All great stuff.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Carol,

You have some colorful relatives I must say.....

Mine were just boring and poor, including me :)

Lesley,

I was baffled for a bit when I saw a Longmuir sent up for "uttering". Later I saw it in conjunction with forgery. Guess he was passing bills before the ink was dry!
