Ancestry Community Trees
does anyone know what this is exactly as Ancestry Community trees have no contacts at all says at the top Contact: Unknown I would really like to find out who puts this info on I have never put anything on ancestry, is it perhaps the remains of someone who had a tree and deleted it but Ancestry keeps the data ? as when you click on the index there are lots of folk that also belong to the tree but all is contact unknown I did not think you could put stuff on without a contact even though some are private you could still send a message

Hi Lesley
I don't know my way round Ancestry very well, but I've gone off to have a look...can you tell me in which section the Ancestry Community trees can be found?
I'm seeing several kinds of tree there (and made the big mistake of looking up one of "my names" to find a whole load of inaccurate names and dates, which has distracted me a bit from why I went to look in the first place!!) :
Best wishes

Hi Lesley,
By Community Trees do you actually mean the OneWorldTree?
I have two trees on Ancestry and have contributed one of these to the OneWorldTree.
Basically, after uploading my tree I allowed Ancestry to add it to the OneWorldTree. I think the point of this is to try and create a huge "tree", hopefully where connections across the world can be made. I was under the impression that viewers could contact me via it. I'd not have added it to the OneWorldTree otherwise.
I'll have to have a closer look at that.

Hi everyone,
I had to look into this one because I've never run across anything like it. Here's what I found:
I clicked on one of your links at the end of the post and looked it over, then I went to Ancestry UK and searched for Harriet Dobbin and clicked on "Find others searching for..." over in the left hand column. This took me to a list of trees for all sorts of Dobbins. While I was reading them I noticed one for Richard W. Dobbin Newtonards Co. Down Ireland and clicked on it because that is where Harriet's father I think it was was from. This tree was a user submitted tree to One World Tree. On the information page for Richard in the right hand column it said "3 user submitted trees" etc. for each fact about him, I think. I clicked on the top "3 user trees..." line and it took me to a page of a family tree record version and up at the top it said "Unknown" next to Contact. Somewhere in there it also said, "This information was gathered from user submitted trees..."
So I'm guessing that your pages came from One World Tree, but I don't have a clue how you would find their origin. My only suggestion would be to contact Ancestry. It might be easier to explain on the telephone.

Hi Lesley
I may be wrong on this one, but the look of the Dobbin tree you posted a link to suggests that it's origins may have been from Rootsweb originally, perhaps? Ancestry took over Rootsweb, so possibly inheritied all the submitted tree info too, but I'm just guessing here.
There is someone else on Rootsweb who has the same Richard Dobbin listed, but there seems to be a difference of opinion regarding his father's name.
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin ... l&id=I4893
But no children listed for the above one.
I'm wondering if it would be worth contacting Ancestry to ask why there are no contact details given for those trees ?
Best wishes

Hi Kenspeckle:
I believe the difference is noted in the terms used 'member tree' (subscribers) and 'user submitted tree' (FREE tree builders).
You can read about these 'user submitted trees' on http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/Default.aspx?req=tree
Ancestry kindly offers you a FREE place to put your tree. Every record you enter in your 'user submitted tree' is linked into the Ancestry kingdom, and therefore viewable to paid subscribers.
User-submitted trees build the database for subscribers who won't be able to contact you, nor you them, until you bite the bullet and pay for a subscription.

Hi Frances
It seems they are offering a free tree builder utility, but in exchange, they are able to make your tree info available publicly. If I've picked it up correctly, its a bit like GR, but it seems that you, personally, have no control over who can view your tree data.
Best wishes
Lesley
It must depend on the submitter having a subscription. I've currently taken out a 14 day sub with Ancestry with a limited number of downloads permitted, but it gives me access to most (all?) areas and I can't see any data for the submitters of those trees, so it is perhaps only paid up members whose details you will see.User-submitted trees build the database for subscribers who won't be able to contact you, nor you them, until you bite the bullet and pay for a subscription.

Just above that there is a link "Contact people who submitted this information"speleobat2 wrote:On the information page for Richard in the right hand column it said "3 user submitted trees" etc. for each fact about him, I think.
Click on that and it gives you a list of the user names. Just click on them to send a message.

Hi All I am a paid Ancestry subscriber but there is no info on the submitter only says contact unknown I have seen the other 3 which all look like copied from each other they have the Richard Dobbin 1780- 1864 but nothing about Harriet & my GG Grandad I did phone ancestry ages ago about this tree with no owner and they had no idea sad they could no offer an explanation and then other folk have Richard 1780-1864 but with a different father ie James Dobbin the minister
I think a lot of blind copying goes on which is not a good thing imagine the future and the confusion ....
I have contacted the folk who have those trees to ask where they got the info and if they know anything about Harriett as she did marry my GG Grandad for sure as I got that from Emerald Isle but then they want £13 for a transcription which is a bit rich as also I have no idea what details will be on the wedding paper I actually thought when I subscribed that the details would be behind the padlock and nothing to indicate what you get when you subscribe glad I only did for a month I may eventually have to fork out just to quell my curiosity but the budget is blown for now
The Letson tree I think I know who it is was that submitted that and I will ask him when he comes back from holiday whether he did submit kept or deleted a tree on ancestry as I am curious about their methods as they do say in the small print that what you upload is theirs to do what they want with
I have just seen this on the family tree bit on ancestry " Let us fill in the blanks for you."
http://trees.ancestry.com/Default.aspx?req=tree
that is scary as I did see years ago one of my ancestors married twice on a tree and no way was that true A lot of folk new to researching would believe anything
Thank you all for taking the time to look at this I really appreciate the feedback bests regards lesley
