Family Photos

Just been doing some (long overdue

) sorting & labelling of some photographs & realised that I have 2 which are of people born in the 18th century. One is of my great great great grandmother, Mary Cuthbertson, who was born in 1790 & the other is of my great great grandfather John Glover, born 1796. I also have one of John with his brothers James, born 1802 & Malcolm born 1804.

I suddenly realised how amazing is was to have such a close connection taking me back well over 200 years & wondered if any of the rest of you felt the same. I do have a family rent book which goes back to the early 1700s but, while fascinating, there isn't the same buzz as being able to see people's faces.

That is an amazing find, they must have been a fair age when thee photgraphs where taken.

Found this photo on-line the other day - my couple greats grandmother.

Sometimes it is worth just Googling the people we are interested in

I've not come across any photos going that far back.

My great great aunt had the sense to marry a photographer... so we have photos of my third great grandparents, who were born in 1795 and who both died in 1870. On another branch, there is a photo taken around the time of the wedding of my gg grandparents who married in 1844. It's absolutely wonderful to be able to look in their eyes and "meet" them, so to speak! I feel very lucky.

Lucky people.
I have a few but none of them have any indication who they were I have asked as many living relatives as I have and no one can identify them.
So it will just have to stay in th "Too hard" basket.

Yes, AndrewC I was lucky that they were long-lived - Mary died in 1880, John in 1886 & his brothers in 1877 & 1883 respectively. I was also lucky that my great-aunts had written on the photos who they were! Mary's took a bit of figuring out as one of them had written "Great grandmother Crawford" & then the other had put underneath "? or Kerr or Glover". However the latter 2 had died too early to be photographed at the age she clearly was (one before 1841 & the other - bless her - in 1855 at the age of 55).

I do have one which has been labelled "Father & grandmother". Unfortunately the photograph was almost certainly taken in the 1860s & the child is about 2 - "Father" was born in 1829! In these circumstances you have to decide whether to keep it or not. I find it very difficult to throw away anything like that from which I might, at some time, glean some more information!

Muriel, that is amazing. They will make a great contribution to your family history records.
What I would love to do would be to invade

the attics of my cousins as they keep telling me that they will look out all their family photos and see if there are any that I don't have! However 5 years on and I am still waiting!

I'll be glad to come over an help with the raid, if you'll help me raid the garage of one of my distant cousins (in Hawaii, if that tempts you!)

I now have this vision of family historians flying about the world to raid attics, garages, huts etc., looking for vital historic information. Any ideas for a costume? Superman look out!
