Neilston or Barrhead

Post by scottishMisty » Mon Feb 23, 2009 7:54 pm

I was looking for members that live near Neilston cemetery
I know that some of my ancestor are buried in the graveyard between 1881 and to the present day
I hope someone lives nearby and would kindly look for some headstone with the name Thorpe on them
I know it is a lot to ask but you never know don't ask you will never know
Cheers Jan

Hi Jan
Without a reference that may be a very difficult task. Barrhead St.Convals' Cemetery at the north end of Barrhead is HUGE (burials from the 1930s onwards) . There is also another cemetery at the south end of Barrhead (from 1870s onwards) which is called Neilston cemetery, also a decent size. There is a small cemetery as well surrounding the protestant church there in the village of Neilston - around what time are your deaths as this will determine the most likely graveyards, along with whether they were Catholic or Protestant.

You can see the size of the cemeteries on Google maps.

Your best bet is to contact this office who may be able to help:
Rhuallan House
1 Montgomery Drive,
Giffnock
East Renfrewshire

0141 577 3913 (cemeteries)

Best wishes
Lesley

I note you have already found someone who has the MI books for Neilston - could you not ask if she would be kind enough to look in the book for you?

Ah, (sorry hadn't got that far yet...!) I see she has already looked in the book, and made the same suggestion as I have, above re. contacting the council:
Jan

I have the MI books which include Neilston. There are no headstones for your Thorpes. That's not to say they aren't buried there just they have no headstones.

To get the burial records you'd need to contact East Renfrewshire Council.
It helps us a lot if you mention which avenues you have already explored, to save folk going off and looking up items on your behalf, which someone else has already looked up. Saves a lot of duplicated effort. :D

Jan
As stated above, you can find out where they are buried by contacting the council, phone number in my previous post.

Once you know which cemetery it is and once you have a grave reference (e.g. section 2, grave 47), there is far more chance of someone maybe being able to go and have a look for you.
a friend was up there and did come across them but he never had his camera
Can you not ask this friend which cemetery he saw them in? That at least means when you phone the council you may be able to make it a bit easier for them to help you.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Jan

Well I had a good 3 hour walk round Neilston today for you and unfortunately I could not find the stone. I assume it is an older stone as I did not check the newer ones over the wall in the new part and unlike some yards all the stones are in good condition and all standing up. Was it a large stone with the family name clearly carved? Obviously if you get the details from Rhuallan pass them on to me and i'll locate it for you.

Cheers

Stuart
