Ancestry problem

Post by keewik » Mon Mar 23, 2009 6:24 pm

I've just had a worrying experience with Ancestry. I never log out - maybe that's a mistake, but it's convenient just to click on the icon and get right in. However this time I got a message saying I/somebody was logged in to my account on another computer. I phoned the helpline and the girl sorted it out, but I had to give her my user name and change the passord (which I didn't want to do) on the phone - I thought your password was meant to be secret? She said there probably wasn't a problem and it was just that their machine hadn't logged me out. Has anybody else had this experience?

Hi Keewik,
That rings a bell-- I think something similar happened to me once. You can always go back online and change your password once again, if you are worried about having done it over the phone. I, too, never log in and out, as it always recognizes my computer as soon as I go to the site.

I take it that you have never shared your login details with another family member? For awhile years ago, my sister and I were both using the same account and that message meant she was online in California and I'd better get off and let her finish!
All the best,
Sarah

No, absolutely nobody knows my details and I've never even gone onto Ancestry from another computer.

Sounds like it is a problem at their end, then. You can log on with the new password and change it again-- then you should be fine.

I had exactly the same thing happen sometime last fall. Even called my sister to see if it was her. She laughed and said that she had forgotten my password almost as soon as I gave it to her!

It was a problem with Ancestry and last four or five hours I think, then everything was back to normal.
