Quoscis, a farm or house in Kincardineshire

Post by speleobat2 » Mon Mar 30, 2009 2:05 am

How's your Latin? Can anyone translate this name?

Better yet, has anyone ever heard of a farm or house near Fetteresso, Kincardinshire by this name? I had two Taylor relatives working there according to the 1891 and 1901 Census records.

Hi Carol,
Note on the census that it says it is in the Cookney registration district. Go to the National Library of Scotland site: http://www.nls.uk/maps/os/oneinch_1st_graphic.html
and choose map 67 "Stonehaven"
Due north of Stonehaven you will see Cookney if you zoom in a bit. A few miles north of that is Quoscies :D

Cheers,
Sarah

Hi Carol,

Quoscies appears on the modern OS map at click here.

Cookney RD was a portion of Fetteresso civil parish.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks Sarah and Andrew,

I'm amazed that it still is on the current map! Wish I could print out the old maps. They are really interesting!

Hii Carol
Wish I could print out the old maps
You can - just take a screenshot (Print Screen key on keyboard) and paste into a image program (MS Paint will do if you have nothing else, or the free Irfanview will do the job nicely), crop as required and print (and save if needed)

best wishes
Lesley

Hi all,

Talk about stumbling on to something! I couldn't get Print Screen to work, but while I was clicking around, the cursor landed on the map and I right clicked. A drop down menu which included Save As appeared so I saved it as a picture, then checked my picture folder. The map was there!
