A bit of a worry

Post by ladybird » Sat Apr 25, 2009 9:43 am

I have something of a conundrum
I was happily googling the name Jaffrey for anything interesting ...as you do.. when I came up with an old post on the ancestry boards giving the family tree for a John Jaffrie (abt 1770) married to Isobel Carmichael (abt 1770) complete with all their children

Hello I thought 8) great stuff!! their son John Jaffrey is my 3x g/grandfather born Barony 1790 married to Isobel Steven... But...this person has him married to a Margaret Robertson born Fife ...what

I have searched the IGI and Scotlandspeople and the only marriage I can come up with between a John Jaffrey and Margaret Robertson is in Linlithgow. Is it possible that a lady from Fife would marry a man from Glasgow in West Lothian and then bring up their family in Glasgow?? I realise these places are not that far apart but it seems a bit of a stretch.

Oh dear, one of us is wrong!!! This message was posted in 2001, I haven't been able to get hold of the poster and I am having great difficulty finding this family on the census

This is the family listed...
John Jaffrey 1791 Barony
Margaret Jaffrey 1802 Dumfermline
children
John 1827 Old Monkland
Daniel 1830 Old Monkland
Janet 1836 Old Monkland
Alexander 1840 Old Monkland
Catherine 1842 Old Monkland
Mary 1844 Old Monkland
Isobella 1848 Old Monkland

Any ideas please where to go from here?

Hi Sylvia

These kind of discrepancies are quite useful sometimes as they make us go back and check our research with new eyes. If your research is all in order and watertight, then you are right and the other person is wrong... however, if you find any holes in your research or places where you might have jumped to conclusions then perhaps the other person has a point.

If you have documentation from the OPR and SR periods from Scotlands People and etc. such as deaths, marriages etc which support your research then well and good. There are many folk out there who rely solely on IGI and Ancestry transcriptions for their "research" never setting eyes on an original document to verifiy the facts or glean more info and inevitably this can lead to the wrong assumptions.

Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks Lesley
I do have the OPR entries for all the children of John Jaffrey and Isobel Carmichael, including their son John Jaffrey.
Isobel Carmichael possibly born Douglas, Lanark (IGI) but nothing definate.
Also I have the marriage cert for John J and Isobel Steven, and his burial in the Southern necropolis in 1848.
Sadly I cannot find a marriage for Jaffrey/Carmichael around the 1790 timeframe and am going purely on naming patterns for further generations.

More slog methinks, but if anyone can find the other family on any census I would be grateful, they seem to have disappeared.

Ahhh Annette
Looks like you've found them and hit the nail on head!!! Well done! Odd though that ancestry can't find them, they must be very badly transcribed

Ireland eh!!! :D The power of Talkingscots...lovely people :D

And yes the second lot in red is mine, He was working at the Free Normal School at Cowcaddens as a Janitor.

Maybe I should put another post up on this person's list and put them straight......oh my goodness

Thank you so much, Sylvia XXXX

Unfortunately none of the children in Old Monkland appear to be registered so it's only a guess that she may be Margaret Robertson. :(
