Have I came to the end of the road?
I have a Joseph Price in my tree who I have only just found out was born in Staffordshire. The hard facts are he was residing in St Andrews Street in the Parish of St Andrews Edinburgh when the banns for his marriage to Janet(also known as Jessie) Henderson were published. They were married in 1844 in Roxburghshire but no parents details were given for him. They had four sons William, Archibald, John and Joseph but on Josephs birt/baptism extract in 1852 it states that he is the son of Joseph Price decd father newspaper reporter who was residing at the time of death in West Bromwich area of London. I found him and his wife with 3 boys in the 1851 census he was down as age 30 and think that I have him in 1841 as a lodger but have no idea who his parents are or indeed how to find them. I am clutching at straws but the eldest son was named William and the second Archibald so it looks like they have followed the Scottsih naming pattern but I am just being hopeful with this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks
Jackie

Hi Jackie
I wish I could accept I'd reached the end of the road sometimes ...
Things I try are searching for wills and monumental inscriptions and obituaries ( given his line of work , you'd think he might get a mention in whatever newspaper he was working on ) .
Playing around with census data may reveal one of your Prices visiting an English relative or vice versa.
Re naming conventions - have you traced Janet/Jessie's parents - is Archibald her father's name ? I noticed on the 1851 census that both William and Archibald appear to have S as a middle initial. Does this stand for Salter ? ( I see a death of a William Salter Price in Scotland of the right age and the only possible birth for Archibald in Walsall that I could spot was for a Salter Parke Price in 1847 ) . If so do you know where Salter fits in ?
On www.freereg.org.uk and on the IGI there is a marriage in 1819 of a Joseph Price to a Mary Salter in Wolverhampton - not too far from Walsall
Now that may be nothing to do with your lot , but it might be something to look into .... well if the S did stand for Salter anyway ..
I'm sure others will have lots of helpful suggestions.

Salter is a name that appears in my dads side as a middle name on quite a few occassions but I had no idea where it came from. Somebody on Genes Reunited pointed out the same marriage and the birth for Salter as you have so I think that this is something that I will have to look into in more detail. Unfortunately the 1841 census has him on his own and by 1851 he was married. I have not looked into Janet/Jessies side other than to find her siblings which was oh so simple as they all appear on one page in the parish for some reason. I was wondering if this was perhaps because her family had standing in the community. I have no idea what info English certs provide so I do not even know if I manage to find a date for his death if parents would be provided. It is so much easier searching Scottish Records, and tonight I have discovered my husbands side came from Ireland at the start of the 1800's so more brick wall to knock down I think
Regards

Hello Jackie,
Is this young Joseph?
JOSEPH GEORGE PRICE
Birth: 27 NOV 1852 Saint Boswells, Roxburgh, Scotland
Father: JOSEPH PRICE
Mother: JANET HENDERSON
IGI Extracted record
If the father was dead at the birth of the son and you have reliable information that he died in West Bromwich then this would have to be his death. West Bromwich itself is very near Birmingham.
FreeBMD http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
Deaths Dec Quarter 1852
Price Joseph, West Bromwich 6b348
West Bromwich Registration district spans the boundaries of the counties of Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire;
There’s information about English certificates here. They’re not very helpful.
http://www.thosedixons.net/certificates/indexbmd.html
No luck with the newspapers. The Birmingham Daily Post online coverage only dates from 1857.
All the best,
Alan

Hi Alan
I have this from parish records on Scoltands People
Joseph George Price fourth child and son of the late Joseph Price lately residing in London(West Bromwich) Reporter and of Janet Henderson his wife now residing in Lettsuden was born in Lettsuden 27 November 1852 and baptised thereafter by Rev Amersville.
I have had a look on parish records for London but could find nothing and he obv had to be alive at the start of the year to have fathered the child. If only he had given his fathers name on the marriage banns life would have been so much easier.
Regards

I have just had another look at Joseph' birth record and after it mentions London it opens brackets and what I thought was just a smudge on the page is actually the word "of" obv indicating that this is where Joseph snr was originally from.
The death in 1852 was unfortunately not him it was registered on 18/12/1852 and deceased was only 22 months old. The staff at West Bromwich reg office are very helpful and had a quick look for me

Hello Jackie,
It’s a shame it wasn’t the WB fellow because it doesn’t leave you much room to move. There are only a couple of London area deaths by that name in 1852 on FreeBMD, I think they were Southwark and Greenwich.
Does it have a date for the actual baptism, or at least the date when the information was written in the register? If it was some time after the actual birth that would extend the possible death date.
Not many deaths seem to make the newspapers, of the 20 odd deaths of that name in 1852 the only one who made any of the online newspapers was the fellow from Gateshead, who died in his 80’s and apparently had a bit of money.
All the best,
Alan

Hi Allan
I had another look at the birth record but only date mentioned was 27 November 1852 however the entry that appears after it on the parish records was a birth on 22 November 1852 but it mentions the baptism was on 18 Jan 1853 so its not impossible that they were both baptised on the same day as the listing above was a birth in December 1852
