I am looking for "accidental deaths" of 3 ancestors, in 1884, 1915 and 1921 in Glasgow. I have the death entries, and know the basic details, but wonder if there were any newspaper articles relating to the events.
I have looked at Glasgow Herald website etc... but am struggling to find archives going back that far. I have also just emailled Mitchell Library, - but again, from their website, it looks like there aren't many of them online? One newspaper I have gained access to is "Scotsman", but have not found anything (seems like it doesn't deal greatly with Glasgow events??). Could anyone give me some advice? Would be very grateful.
Cheers
Maggie

Hello Maggie,
The Glasgow Herald is online only up to 1900 and anything after that would require a look at microfilm or hard copies. Accidental deaths in Glasgow would very probably be reported in the Glasgow Herald and may or may not have gravitated to the Scotsman. Depending on the nature of the accident it may even have made it as far as the London Times. If you know the dates of the events and if they were reported they would likely be findable in the GH.
The impression I have of The Scotsman is that it was trying to be a National paper at the same time as it was a local paper and had less room for events in the ‘provinces’. It sometimes isn’t as easy to search as the other papers. Have you seen Sally’s guide to searching The Scotsman? http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 60&start=0
The Watt library index of the Greenock papers may be worth a look, it goes to “around 1913.” http://www.inverclyde.gov.uk/GeneralR.a ... catid=1403
If you wanted to post the details of the deaths, dates and places and cause etc someone else could have a look for the 1884 one and maybe a play with the Scotsman free search and see if they have any luck.
Did you get your Australian National or State Library card that gives you access to 19C newspapers etc?
All the best,
Alan

HI "Wilma," and "Currie",
Thanks a lot for your replies. I hadn't thought of the Evening Times - will have a search re archives for that one.
The 3 ancestors I have are
Hugh McNab, aged about 37, found drowned in Greenock Harbour (resident of Calton Glasgow), 3 March 1884, (so Glasgow Herald - "archives up to 1900" may have a relevant report - only problem is I can't figure out how to gain access to their archives?)
John Carrigan, who died 17 December 1915 accidental Fracture of skull, 13 days previous (was a steelworks furnaceman), age 20.
John Carrigan, grandfather of the above, who died age 89 on 1st April 1921, "Fracture of left fibula, 2 days, cardiac failure, - through being knocked down and run over by a horse and lorry (accidental)."
I did chase up the Hugh McNab one, and the Greenock Telegraph did send me a transcription of an article, but didn't send a copy of it - which we would like to have.
I have just got my Australian National Library card - and it gives access to 19 c. newspapers.... but can't find the Glasgow ones I want !!
thanks again, if you can give any further ideas....
Maggie

Hello Maggie,
There are only four Scottish newspapers in the 19C database, Aberdeen Journal, Caledonian Mercury, Chartist Circular and Glasgow Herald.
Log on to 19C newspapers and on the yellow basic search page you’ll see Browse Publication Title towards the bottom, click on that. In the window that pops up place a tick in the box next to those or whichever ones you wish to search. Click next to move to other pages. Check the box on the right to make sure they’re all listed and click submit.
If you search for DROWNED in the GH from 1st March 1884 you’ll see a result “The Assets Company” on 4th March. The third small item below the main one is about the body of a man, aged between 30 and 40, being found floating in the West Harbour, Greenock, the day before by men on a Dredger.
See how you go, I’ll have another look.

HI Alan,
Thanks very much for your help - I finally got the article - not a huge amount re my great grandfather Hugh McNab's death, but good to read it in its original format. Took me a while to understand how to get around the Glasgow Herald database, but things eventually clicked. Amazing this research broadens our "horizons" and knowledge in all regards eh?
Now all i need to do is find an avenue for the other two family "deaths" in 1915 and 1921.
Cheers -
Maggie.
