Hi Fay
On IGI there is an extract for a Margaret who looks very likely and if so, it looks like daughter Margaret was Jessie's daughter, but possibly not Peter's

MARGARET NICHOLSON
Event(s):
Birth: 24 FEB 1874 Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland
Parents:
Mother: JESSIE NICHOLSON

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Fay,

From what I have been able to ascertain the 71st Regiment of Foot were in the Mediterranean area for many years until mid 1880, they were then stationed at Edinburgh Castle until May 1881 when they moved to Glasgow. About this time they united with the 74th Regiment of Foot to become the 1st and 2nd battalions respectively of the Highland Light Infantry.

The 1st Battalion, the former 71st, remained in Glasgow for the time being. The 2nd Battalion, the former 74th, went off to do most of their soldiering in distant parts of the Empire. In November 1882 the 1st Battalion Highland Light Infantry went off to Ireland and remained there until about mid 1890 when they surfaced in Dover where it seems they may have stayed for a while. While all this was going on there was a Highland Light Infantry Depot in Glasgow responsible for acquiring recruits for both main Battalions and for training and whatever.

The 1891 Census and Birth Certificates for the children should give you some clues as what Peter Paton was up to.

I’ve never dug into the National Archives but they have a number of Research Guides which should help. Try this one. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/mili ... /step4.htm

As far as I know this one gives the current setup for when National Archives does the work of finding any existing record. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/docu ... 0_1913.pdf

If you get stuck and need some more specialised advice you could try a Military Forum such as the Victorian Wars forum. http://www.victorianwars.com/index.php? ... 7c39a865a4

Hope that’s useful,
Alan
