Hi,
Hope someone may be able to answer this query. I have a friend born in Canada who's father was born in Scotland. Can my friend apply for a British passport and is he eligible to become a British subject?

In order to claim British citizenship by descent through the male line, the parents need to have been married. Assuming they are or were at the time of his birth, then yes he would be eligible to apply for a British passport. He would not be able to pass that on to his children, unless they were born in the UK.

My husband and I were born in Scotland as were my 2 daughters. My son was born in Australia and he was eligible for a British passport, which he has as well as his Australian passport. We all have both.
