Has anyone got any experience/thoughts on websites that offer reports on historic facts on a surname. Are the reports any good?

Ireally do not think you would gain much in the way of useful information. Far better to invest in a copy of Black's Scottish Surnames or consult the same book at your local library!

Black, George F. The Surnames of Scotland: their origin, meaning and history. Edinburgh: Birlinn, 1999, Reprinted 2004 (first published by the New York Public Library, 1946) - viewed as the principal work on surname origins.

Dorward, David. Scottish Surnames. Glasgow: HarperCollins, 1995 – a pocket-sized book, which concentrates on surnames currently in use in Scotland. It is particularly useful for its information on surname concentrations.

There was a website featured here some time ago. It covered the distribution of surnames in the UK over two periods of time about one hundred years apart. It also analysed the origin of surnames but not without some criticism as I recall.
Unfortunately, I lost a lot of data recently and can't remember its name. I have a feeling though that someone out there will be able to remind us.

It's now www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk
It show the distribution of names starting with the 1881 census & comparing that with the distribution in 1998 (not sure where they got the latter data from).

Hi daj,
House of names and its ilk are for the tourists if you will. They are generic reports on a name. Depending on where the company is from they will tell you a wee surname history and some famous peeps to go with it. Could be all Americans or Australians and here you are in Rose & Cromarty wondering how that affects you.
