Finlay Ross
Hi I am a brand new "newbie" and have no experience of genealogical research so I hope some one can help
I am looking to research my deceased father - Finlay Ross b.13.12.1907 - I do not know where he was born but THINK it may have been in the Coatbridge area because I remember as a child visiting the "family house" at the address which I think was ...Cora Lynn, Blair Hill Coatbridge
My father had a sister (deceased )...Jane - who was older than him - but I don't know her birth date
Any help or advice would be appreciated

Welcome to TS Colin,
Your first port of call would be Scotlands People to find your father's Birth [it's over 100 years ago, so will be there] there are 3 for 1907/08 and only one of those is in Lanarkshire [a December birth might be registered in the next Jan ].
That will give his parent's names and date of marriage - though you should have that info from his death cert.?
Using the information there can help you jump back to your grandparent's marriages and so on.
Happy Hunting
and do ask if you need further help, the regulars on Talking Scot are a very helpful bunch.

Have been onto Scotlands People and see that there are 3 records to view (have not subscibed yet) but am not absolutely sure that Lanarkshire is where he was born - if he was born somwhere else, will I not be off on a wrong direction ?
He died in England in 1968 and I am told that the deceased parents are not on death certs - don't know if that is true though

...and welcome to Talking Scot.
Do you have any idea of either of the names of your granparents, the parents of Finlay? That might help a good deal if you do.
Do you have a copy or have access to your parents' marriage? That will give the name of Finlay's father. Did your father marry in Scotland?
Are you based in Scotland or elewhere?
Best wishes

Hi Lesley
No, I have no knowledge of my grandparents at all - infact the imperative for this research is that I was told when a child that ancestors of my father were explorers and were connected with the naming of the Ross straits; hence my embarkation on this search

As far as I know he married in England and he and my mother died in England - my aunt never married and I think she died in Scotland - but I don't know when or where - nor do I have her full nameWilmaM wrote:Another avenue is a marriage, did Finlay marry in Scotland?
Or going sideways - his sister Jane did she marry? or die in Scotland? Looking for both a Woman's married and maiden name on a death can help.

Thank you both for your input and help - it is gratefully received
I am going to "interrogate" people/family to try to get some more salient information which will then let me obtain records from ScotlandPeople etc., that I know are for the right person
This is rather like having an itch that requires more scratching than you thought !
kind regards
Colin

Hi Colin
If your local library has free online access to Ancestry, you can also search the indexes there.
Best wishes
Lesley
As you think it was in England in that case I'd suggest a search on Free BMD www.freebmd.org.uk for the marriage initially as that is a free site.As far as I know he married in England and he and my mother died in England
