Hello and welcome to TalkingScot.

Was it North Lanarkshire Council you contacted?

I've just noticed there was no undertaker but I would have thought it would have been recorded somewhere.

Hopefully somebody with more knowledge of burials will be along soon.

Regards,
Annette

Hi Annett, Yes it was North Lanarkshire Council, they were really good, but could not find a lair or a burial anywhere with the Simpson, or Gillespie(Wife) Name, yet the death certificate states he was buried there.

Hello Zargessa1,

The Glasgow Herald, Thursday, October 30, 1873, has a report:—

“AIRDRIE.—Sudden Death in a Pit.—A miner named Walter Simpson died while at his usual work in No. 1 Ironstone Pit, Arden. Along with other workmen, he was sitting smoking his pipe, when he suddenly complained that his sight seemed to be deserting him, and he fell forward unconscious. He was removed home, and medical aid sent for, but he never rallied, death having been almost instantaneous. Deceased was 62 years of age.”

Is he the same fellow?

Alan

Hi Allan. I dont know. I have never saw this bit of information before. I will have to have a look at the info I have on Walter which is only from his death certificate. This would be great if it was the same Walter. Thanks

North Lanarkshire Archives (at Cumbernauld) have the Lair Owner/Burial Registers for Clarkston Churchyard.

Zargessa - I forgot to take your details with me when I was having a look the other day - Sorry!!

Hi Anne.
Many thanks for the information. I have been in touch with North Lanarkshire via email and the cannot find a lair for Walter Simpson, or even a Gillespie Lair (Wifes surname) I am not even sure where she is buried either. I am assuming they were both put in paupers graves and no stone, but surely there must be some sort of burial record for that Walter died 1873 and Jane 1874. both claldercrux Shotts.
The Register of Corrected entries states the following,
Register of corrected entries . walter simpson age about 62y, head male, d 28.10.1873 in the house at caldercruix in the parish of shotts occupied by the deceased. Apoplepsy, not known how long desease cntinued, thomas torrance surgeon airdirei saw the body soon after his death, buried clarkston churchyard no undertaker

Hello Zargessa,

I was having another look through the Clarkston Lair (Owners) Records the other day but as I didn't have a lot of time, I only managed to look through the Western Side (all lairs to the left of the main pathway to the church).

There are 2 (joint) lairs owned by a George Simpson of Caldercruix: Division 9, Lairs 325 & 326, purchased in October 1873 ..... a bit of a co-incidence?

Could this George have been Walter's father/brother?? Caldercruix is only a wee place and Simpson is quite a common name but .......?

Hi Anne.

Wow. I have just checked the tree and Walter had a son called George born 1836 and died 1887 in Airdrie, this might be the son. you are an angel. I will have to check this out now in the hope there might be a stone and its the correct people. thanks Anne
