Hi Daveyboy
,,,and welcome toTalking Scot
You don't mention where you have looked already, or if you have made a start to your research. If you are just starting out, the place to start your research, after you have looked out any birth, marriage or death certificates you may have at home, and asked any living relatives what they can remember is to go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk It is a pay-per-view site and the only means to access the original Scottish records online.
There are quite a number of Gemlos listed there as you can see:
Census 1841 9
Census 1851 3
Census 1861 37
Census 1871 10
Census 1881 18
Census 1891 22
Census 1901 32
Old Parish Records Births & Christenings 1538 - 1854 60
Old Parish Records Banns & Marriages 1538 - 1854 48
Old Parish Records Deaths & Burials 1538 - 1854 56
Statutory Register Births 1855 - 2006 48
Statutory Register Marriages 1855 - 1933 25
Statutory Register Deaths 1855 - 2006 83
Wills & Testaments 1513 - 1901 3
On a quick search there is a record of a marriage of a Peter Gemlo in 1908, in Montrose, Angus. The marriage entry will give you his age, his parents names and the same details for his wife.
If you need any help finding records there, or any further advice if you get stuck, do give us a shout!
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Davey
There's no substitute for Scotland's People but in 1901 in Montrose there is this family which may be yours:
26 River Street
James Gemlo aged 66 Cooper born Montrose
Annie Gemlo aged 58 born Montrose
Alexander Gemlo son aged 22 Labourer born Montrose
David Gemlo son aged 19 Labourer born Montrose
Peter Gemlo son aged 11 Baker's Apprentice, born Montrose
Annie Gemlo daur aged 20 ?Tow Spinner born Montrose
Jane Gemlo daur aged (says 75) must be 15 ?Low Spinner born Montrose
In 1891 the family also includes
John 21
Elizabeth 29 and
Jemima 23
In that census Peter is transcribed on Ancestry as 8 which is more likely as he is a baker's apprentice in 1901 which would be unlikely if he was only 11. The ages are a bit different in 1891 and are I think more accurately transcribed.
In 1881 there is also a James W Ferrier aged 14 born Craig in Forfarshire who is also given as 'son'. I wonder if he is Annie's son and if Annie is a second wife.
Indeed it seems that James's first wife was probably Mary Ann Tosh.
From the International Genealogical Index it appears that James marries Mary Ann in 1858 and Ann Whitton in 1874. If I were you I would have a look at both of these marriage certificates once you have established that Peter's parents were James and Annie.
From the IGI it looks as though there are records of Gemlos going back to the late C17 in Montrose so you may be on to a wee goldmine there.
Happy searching.

FreeCen http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl has 22 Gemlo records for the 1841 Census - all in Montrose Angus.
The database there is far from complete, but they might tie in at some stage for your family.
As Lesley said a gathering of certificates and information from relations is the first stage, then visit Scotlandspeople and use the census records to help fill in the gaps.
With such an unusual name you could get off to a good start, but I'd beware misspellings or mistranscriptions.

It seems that your Peter served in the Royal Field Artillery in WWI. His medal card is available. In addition his brother David died in 1917 while serving with the 11th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. His details are on the Commonwealth War Graves site.
