Pictures of People & Places etc

As we all know, having information on our ancestors is one thing, but bringing them and their places of work etc to life really is meat on the bones!

So where would I start to look for possible photo's of my ancestors, where they lived or worked etc? From census records and death certificates I have addresses. Where would be the best place to start looking, this would be in the Aberdeen areas, Merkland Road, Spit/tal, the trade being 'spirit dealer/grocer'

There are many different ways of finding out a little more of the general way of life way back then.

First of all I'd get a good map of the area, both old and new
old: www.old-maps.co.uk
www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/townplans
new: www.multimap.com also gives you an Aeriel or birds eye view of the places

And acquaint yourself with the general area that the addresses indicate - some places are pretty well preserved as they were with streets and buildings still in the same places. Other places , like Glasgow, are altered beyond recognition!

Then fall back on a good old GOOGLE!
Enter some of the street names and see what shows up.

The Aberdeen family history society could be a useful resource too http://www.anesfhs.org.uk/ with lists of many books about the area.
