McGillivray family, Aberdeen
I am trying to trace descendants of George Gray (Tea Planter)
and Agnes Sinclair McGillivray (Teacher) who married in Aberdeen
in 1920. I seem to have reached a dead end in this search. Any advice?

Re: McGillivray family, Aberdeen
If you try a death search at Scotlands People putting Gray in the surname box and McGillivray in the mother's maiden name box you may find any children that way. You should know by the ages if they are a possibility and sometimes by the middle names.Irene C. wrote:I am trying to trace descendants of George Gray (Tea Planter)

Of course they may still be alive.

Annette

Hi Irene
I realise you are in Ireland, but the only way I know to trace forwards is to spend a day or two, or however long it takes, in the Scotlands People Centre in Edinburgh, trying to follow lines forward. It is a much harder task than tracing backwards, and much depends on the surnames, how frequent they are, or how prone they are to spelling variations.
Any children born to this couple may still be alive so why not try a letter in a local newspaper perhaps?
Best wishes
Lesley

Thank you to Hilmit & Lesley for replies
to my query.
Will try both option, I can't find a death

they emigrated. I don't know where he
was located when planting tea !!

Hi Irene C
I may be able to assist with your enquiry. I am a direct decendant of George Gray & Agnes Sinclair McGillvray. I realise that your request was some time ago but let me know if you are still interested.
Kind regards

Greetings Bob.
Welcome to TalkingScot.
I see that Irene was only active on this site for a couple of months back in 2009 and not visited since. Hopefully she has the same email address that she signed on with, and therefore will recieve notification of your post.
If she does not respond in a few days come back and TS members, will see through their memberships of other genealogical sites, if Irene has more recent postings on them.

I am delighted to hear from you, I have been researching my Scottish ancestry for some time but had come to a dead end !
My connection is through Agnes McGillivray and I would be interested to share what I know about that side of the family
Kind regards, Irene

Re: McGillivray family, Aberdeen
Well Irene it sounds as though we are researching along the same lines. Id be fascinated to hear about your side of the family & I will give you as much info as I have from this end.
George Gray & Agnes (Nancy) McGillivray moved to India in the 1920s (not sure of date). George (my paternal grandfather) was indeed a tea planter in the Sibsigar district of Assam. They had 2 boys; Ian & Alastair (my father). George died in India in 1932 and Nancy returned to the UK with Ian & Alastair shortly thereafter. She settled in Birmingham & went back to teaching I think. She spent some time in New Zealand in the 1950s and then returned again to the UK. She died in 1973 in London. Ian still lives in Auckland but my father died in 1995.
Am I correct in assuming that you are related to Dawson? If I remember correctly he was always refered to by my father as 'Uncle Dawsey'. I would love to know more about the family in general. I am running out of people who are related and know anything at all or are even interested!! I have a number of photos with several unidentified people if you again are interested too. I look forward to hearing from you & more about the family.
Kind regards

Re: McGillivray family, Aberdeen
Greetings Bob & Irene, from NZ.
Each time we see of a link up via TalkingScot, gives us regulars a buzz, and more hope that our turn will be next.
We would like to hear more of you successes, but as you mention some who are still living, details about them should be discussed in PM's [private messages] or off line. You will see a PM icon [to click on] below the posters profife adjacent to the text panel. The system is similar to posting on the forum.
All the best,
Alan SHARP.
