Parents name

Post by thomsos » Sun Oct 18, 2009 2:24 pm

Could I please have someone’s opinion on a parents name.....fist I have a family name of White, parents Thomas White and Alice Mcgrory, married 1849, Barony, and appear to have 8 children 1850 – 1865.

The one that I am interested in was Catherine White.... b1856 married William Gillan in 1874, d 1926.

On Catherine’s BC her parents are listed Thomas Whyte and Helen Whyte, ms Mcgrory, informant was her grandmother Rose Mcgrory.
On her MC her parents were Thomas White and Alice White ms Mcgrory.
Her DC have the same names as on her MC.

......now I have the Catholic records, again her parents are listed as Thomas Whyte and Helen Mcgrory... while all her other sibling parents are Thomas White and Alice McGrory, (although McGrory has a view variations) could I possible have the wrong Catherine White? Everything else fits into place , Or did her mum just like calling herself Helen?

Sandra

Ps. Hope this all make sense :?

Hi Sandra,

I think her mother, Rose McGrory is likely to call her daughter by the name she gave her at birth...although, she could have gotten confused, I suppose.
Did you look for Helen/Alice's OPR birth to see what was on there?
What name did she use on the census records?

I'd say that it was highly likely that Helen and Alice White/Whyte are one and the same. Alice could have been a middle name, or it could have been a pet name, or she might just have liked the name Alice that she preferred to use. :)

Regards,
Anne H

Hi Anne,
Helen/Alice was born in Ireland, she used the name Alice when she Married, and was Alice on the 1881 census, but on the 1861 census she used the Annie!!!, think she must have just like a change name :)
I've still to find her DC which I am having a bit of difficulty with , although as far as I know she died 1905, St Joseph's home, Garngadhill
