Oh well. I'd planned to try to get to Edinburgh this week as there's a break from teaching... until work put a three-line-whip meeting on for the whole of yesterday. Driving up today and back Saturday would be too much, especially as I've got more work things to do today...

I did look at the cost of going up and back on the train tomorrow - eighty-five quid, so I won't do that for a limited amount of the day.

Alas - well, I've have to plan for a trip in January!

Hi Jenny

You've probably already thought of this, but if you can book your ticket some time in advance, you can save a substantial amount. I do this if I'm going to Glasgow; normal return fare is about £36. If I book online about a month in advance I can usually get there and back for £12. (but I'm not always able to predict when I can get away, which is the problem you may also have...)

Yes, that's the problem - not being able to predict. Also, if I was going for a longer time (as hoped) I'd have driven.
But, I may try to 'book a day' and go up on a cheaper ticket. It's a good idea.

(Should add, though, that any time I've looked at longer-range tickets they are still expensive on that route, though I've had some success on others!)

Maybe you should follow Rail Track's lead

They send staff to meetings and the like by coach because "the train is too expensive"

That did make me laugh, Mary, but it's a sad reflection on our rail system which should be the best way to get places!
