Episcopal records from Stonehaven / Rae family

Post by Maggie64 » Thu Nov 19, 2009 4:37 pm

Hello everyone,

I was home in Dundee for my holiday last month, I visited TVFHS and I went to their library downstair and I have discovered my 4x great grandmother Isabella Rae's birth entry. It was written that she was christening on March 25 1798 in Stonehaven, this record was written by Episcopal church.... of course I could not find her entry on www.familysearch.org or at Scotandspeople Register house in Edinburgh . Was this records from Church of England? Were my Rae ancestors not Roman Catholic or they were too poor to pay for the entries with Church of Scotland? I know that many of my Rae ancestors are from Dunnottar/Stonehaven. Is there anything special about episcopal records? nothing much?

Any ideas where to find episcopal records from Scotland to see if anything is missing from my family history no wondering that I FINALLY found her entry since I took up family history in 2004.

One thing is bothering me is that I am not sure which is my Mathew Rae (Isabella's father) who was wright in Stonehaven and he was married to Elisabeth Clark on Dec 28 1787 in Dundee, there is another entry was taken in Dunnottar in Jan 1788 (same couple). I dont know when or where Mathew was born... but I know that he died in April 16 1828 aged 64 in Fettersso. Can you pls help me out with this Rae family history?

Hi Maggie,

The only Episcopal Church that I see records listed for in that area is St John's Episcopal Chapel, Drumlithie in Fetteresso parish. Its baptismal and marriage blotter registers have been filmed by the LDS, although I see no obvious sign of its records on the online IGI. If you can get to an LDS Family History Centre, then you should be able to order in film #1068236 and find baptisms for 1793-1825 and marriages 1813-1825. However, these may be the records you have already seen at the Tay Valley FHS.

See http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... no=1068236

The film listed above is from the MR3 (miscellaneous records) in New Register House. I am not sure that these are found onscreen at the ScotlandsPeople Centre. However, if these are not available onscreen, the microfilm should be available upon request.

I see no sign of these records in the NAS online index.

All the best,

AndrewP

The Episcopal Church in Stonehaven is St James', its records are held by Dundee University Archives. "Registers of baptisms 1756-1878, marriages 1770-1813, 1828-1880, burials 1828-1865, confirmations 1795-1860, minutes and accounts 1757-1780, miscellaneous loose papers, charity records and appeals for funds 1812-1867 "

Hi again,
Dear Andrew and Isabel,

I wanted to say big thank you for your wee help that I really appreciate it very much. I will check with those links. I will try to visit one of LDS church in West Toronto to see if they have that kind of records. I wish I stayed longer at Register House in Edinburgh but my time was up. It was worth for my trip to Edinburgh and TVFHS in Dundee to dig out my family history that is braw!

I am struggling to find which was my Mathew Rae but there is a few entries in 1760's but I guess that he was the one who was born in Peterculter Aberdeenshire that would be closer to Stonehaven right? but I have no proof about those. The key I know that he was married in Dundee in 1787... why Dundee? did he have his family frae Bonnie Dundee? His death was in Fettersco in 1828 I guess that many of Rae families are from that area.
Any idea where did my ancestor Mathew Rae was born???? he was wright (joiner) my 4x grandmother Isabella's christening entries was listed that Mathew was wright from Stonehaven on March 25 1798. So far I know that Mathew and his wife Elisabeth Clark had some children, Catharine in 1792, John (died as infant), Isabella in 1798, Alexander in 1804. If you knew about this Rae family pls contact me ok.

thank you so much for your time.
cherrio Margaret :)
