Hi Jan

The only way of knowing which is the James you are hoping to find would be to see each of the Poor Relief application forms in the bound volumes listed above. Unfortunately, the index usually gives no more information than you already have there, so it can be difficult with name combinations which are quite frequently occurring.

I've often found myself ordering up half a dozen or so books based on the index, only to find that none are the particular person I'd hoped to locate, as it is only at that stage that further details like parent names, other family etc. can be seen. But if your chap was in the poorhouse, then there is a chance the record is there somewhere, if it is one of those which has survived.

thanks for the reply , going to be costly getting copies if each one isnt it as its £10 a copy , think i will settle of one of the children as i have a dob , and hopefully the Father having placed the children has given some details of himself

The 1869 and 1870 applications were both JAmes Stewart married to Mary Ann Martin.

I'll type up the application transcriptions later but James died 30/5/1872 - parents Joseph Stewart and Jane Harris.

Poorhouse Application - James Stewart 26/9/70
Born Letterkenny Co. Donegal
Married - age 34 - Brushmaker - Protestant
Wife - Mary Ann Martin, pregnant, age 31 born Belfast, a bookfolder, idle having a sore finger, earns 4/- per week from lodgers.
Children- Archd 6 born 64 St James Road
Mary 4 years 4 months born 64 St James road
George 3 born 71 St James Road
(added Later) Edward born 5th October 1870

Son of Joseph Stewart , a Buttler (?that's what it looks like) and Jane Harris both dead.

Applicant was in Barnhill from April till June 1869. His wife's family had 2/6 a week for 16 weeks when it was proposed by the inspector to send them all home to Ireland.

Wife died 22/10/70
3/11/70 James Stewart and children Mary, George and Edward admitted to poorhouse at pauper's request.
26/11/70 Application from 71 St James Road for outdoor and school forArchd who is residing with grandfather.
6/9/71 Wrote to society
30/5/72 James stewart died in poorhouse
15/6/72 Mary, George and Edward James sent to nurse



The other application made in 1869 was for James when he was admitted as insane and stayed fron April - June 1869.

From his previous addresses this is almost certainly James's brother in 1861 at 5 Barrels Lane -
