Garratt/Garrett

Post by loish711 » Thu Dec 31, 2009 5:24 pm

According to the 1841 English census my ancestor Samuel Garratt was from Scotland. He was living Wakefield at the time aged 72 and a School Master. This would mean he was born around 1769. I have tried finding him on Scotlands People but am unable to locate him. Anyone have any ideas of where I can go from here? Thanks.

Hi loish711,
Welcome to Talking Scot! [scotland-flag]
From the IGI I see that all Samuel's children were christened in either the New or Zion Independant Church or the Salem Chapel George Street Independant Church, both in Wakefield. This would seem to indicate that he perhaps was not a member of the established Church, so would not be in the OPRs. At the moment this means a manual search in the records of other surviving churches, mostly held at the National Archives in Edinburgh. A tedious task if you don't even know which part of Scotland!

Have you tried following all of his children down through the census years to see if any of them ended up in Scotland, with great luck staying with a relative?

All the best,
Sarah

Hi,

This may be no help at all, but there are quite a few Manx Garretts. Is there any hint of Manx ancestry in your family? Might be worth check Isle of Man census records in case that reference to Scotland is incorrect.

Hi MCC,
Welcome to [talkingscot]
Good suggestion to check the Isle of Man, which otherwise one tends to forget, hopping back and forth between England and Scotland.
All the best,
Sarah
