stocket house?

Post by speleobat2 » Fri Jan 22, 2010 12:38 am

Twice today, I've come across "stocket house" as part of an address when I've never seen the phrase before! One was the Belvidere Stocket House in Old Machar, Aberdeen and the other was the Maryville Stocket House where the person concerned was a member of the military. The head of the household for the Belvidere Stocket House was described as "fundholder" under occupation.

I didn't find an explanation on Google. Is anyone familiar with this term?

Hi Carol,

Wikipedia (a source of varying reliability) gives Stocket as the name of an old forest, now an area within Aberdeen.

All the best,

Thanks Andrew!

It turns out that the Maryville address was essentially the same location, different person though. I came across it when I was reading the index for Cadenhead wills and inventories. James Cadenhead was living at Maryville, Stocket, Parish of Old Aberdeen when he died. He was a retired soldier. The Belvidere address came from Ancestry and had no commas in it so it came out Belvidere Stocket House--could well have been Belvidere House, Stocket!
