List of Scottish high schools in 1910's

Post by Adam Brown » Tue Feb 02, 2010 5:54 pm

Schools are an untapped source of war memorials in Scotland. To date we've got war memorials and rolls of honour from 100 schools from all over Scotland published on the Scottish War Memorial Project forum but 60 of them are from only four areas (Dumfries & Galloway, Dundee & Angus, City of Edinburgh and Perth & Kinross). Given what we now know about the vast numbers of memorials and rolls of honour which were created just after the Great War across the whole spectrum of society I wouldn't be surprised if every High School or Academy which existed at that time had one.

This is a bit of a long shot but does anyone know if there would be a list somewhere, which was published at that time, either at a county or national level, of higher grade schools? With a list of schools from that period we can perhaps work through the list seeing if the present day schools have a memorial on display or in storage.

Regards

Not a Scottish one but I know Watford Boys has a Roll of Honour for it's old boys-sadly added to last year by an old boy killed in Afghanistan.
I think my old school Clydebank High had one too(from the original school).

Hi Adam

I don't know if one single place exists with the information you're looking for, but this link takes you to the Scottish Govenment site for Education:- http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Educa ... s/Contacts

I couldn't see anyone who might be able to answer the question from there, but I remember that we used this link to check term dates when we were arranging courses for teachers:- http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications ... olHolidays

It will give you a link to the web pages of all the local authorities in Scotland and then to their archives. It would mean some work, but if you composed and email outlining the info you were looking for, you could send one email to all the authorities using a distribution list and sending as "blind" copy. That way they would each think they were getting an individual email!!

I can't think of anywhere else the information might exist.

All the best ... :)

Liz

PS - Nice to see you're still working away on the project - well done to all of you working on it.

Joette

Thanks for the confirmation of the Clydebank High roll of honour, it's good to know they had one and hopefully it is still in the current school.

Liz

It was a bit of a tall order but I was hoping their might have been a teachers almanac or something like that. That's a good idea about one mail to all the authorities. The problem is whether they would know how old all their schools were. I'm not confident they'd know the answer.

I'll have to think about what information about schools would have been published at that time and would still exist in libraries today. It may be the information would have been held in something else like an old equivalent of the yellow pages but would that have survived 80 years?

Thanks for the help and encouragement about the forum, we're in it for the long haul!

Kind regards

Adam

Hi Adam,

Another possibility to explore is the Local Studies Libraries. They may well hold some records of schools in their areas. The Libraries link in the bar above takes you to a list of most of these libraries around Scotland.

All the best,

I know St. Mary's in Greenock (now a primary school) has one as does Greenock Academy. There WERE "Rolls of Honour" boards at Greenock High and St. Columba's but the former has amalgamated with another school to become Inverclyde Academy and the latter has temporarily moved, the original buildings are now gone. There may be others in the area.

Also consisider Independant Schools in former "Colonies". Kenton College, a "Prep" school in Nairobi, had boards for both wars and I think Pembroke House, near Nakuru, is old enough too.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Andrew

Thanks, local libraries are probably the best bet to start with.

Andy

Thanks for your information. Schools outside Scotland will probably be outside our scope unless they were a Scots School or Scots College. That's great information about Greenock though, your information shows that in Greenock alone there are / were at least four school memorials and rolls. That suggests to me there are hundreds out there across Scotland. The rolls are particularly valuable because they often list those who served, and not just those who died.

Thanks for your help.

Kind regards

Bellahouston Academy in Glasgow had an impresive brass one, moved I gather from the Paisley Road West building to the Gower Terrace site. the place was damaged by fire but I think it survived. I can't find any pictures of it though.

All the High schools in the Falkirk area are very new so the museums or Callender House would maybe be the best source of information for here.

Hello Adam,

I found some Scottish Secondary Schools in Parliamentary Papers. Until 1908 there was an annual report into secondary education in Scotland and that’s the closest I could get to WW1. (1908 [Cd. 4310] Secondary education (Scotland). Report for the year 1908 by J. Struthers, Esq., C.B., LL.D.)

It contains a list of secondary schools that applied for grants and a list of others that did not, but which were inspected. There’s about 90 pages in total, mainly about secondary education in general and tables of information about the ones with grants. I’ve OCR’d and corrected the lists as under. There may be some other school names buried within the document.

Alan

That's fantastic, thanks so much for taking the time to find this list. I'm more than happy to use a list from 1908 because I'm sure most were still in existence 10 years later. I don't think it's a complete list (e.g. Harris Academy, Dundee is not on it) but looking at the list I can see quite a few still exist today and that's a great place to start.

I'll PM you me e-mail address for the files and I can have a good look for other schools.

Many thanks

Adam
