Ann Aitken born 1847ish in ?????????????????
Family story is she was born on a boat.
1851 census has this for her.
Name: Ann Aitken
Age: 5
Estimated birth year: abt 1846
Relationship: Daughter
Father's Name: Michall
Mother's Name: Mary
Gender: Female
Where born: Dalmeny, Linlithgow
Parish Number: 665
Civil parish: Dalmeny
Town: Cramond Bridge
Address: Cramond Bridge
Her 3 older sisters all born in 'Card' Ireland.
A younger brother also born Dalmeny Linlithgow 1849. I have not been able to find either of their births.
1861 census has her born in Ireland. My Aunt seems to think there was problems with registering her death as she didn't have a birth certificate. I have found her death in Glasgow.
So, is is possible she could have been born an a boat coming from Ireland to Scotland and if so where would her place of birth be?
all the best

Is it possible the family were Roman Catholic? If so there will most likely be no menion in the OPRs or on IGI etc.Did she marry in Scotland? If so, that will likely give the church.A younger brother also born Dalmeny Linlithgow 1849. I have not been able to find either of their births.
I don't think it was common for folk born in the 1840s to have a copy of their own birth certificate. My Aunt seems to think there was problems with registering her death as she didn't have a birth certificate. I have found her death in Glasgow.
Best wishes

Hi Lesley,
Thanks for your response.
Yes, I did think about them being Catholic. Ann and Adam were married in the Established Church of Scotland at Crammond Village. I am not sure if this would confirm if Ann was born Catholic or not though. Some folk did change their religion.
I sort of thought that it wasn't common to have a birth certificate back then. So thanks for confirming that for me.

Established church would suggest not RC, but as you say, at that time people did change religion for one reason or another, so nothing really can be discounted...Ann and Adam were married in the Established Church of Scotland at Crammond Village. Hi Helen,
By 1861 they had crossed the River Almond into Cramond parish, at Dowies Mill, probably only a hundred yards or so from their previous address at Cramond Bridge. Sadly the census enumerator followed the rules and gave the birthplaces only as Ireland.
All the best,

Yet (if I have the correct lady) in 1871 she states she was born at Crammond.AndrewP wrote:Hi Helen,

Yes, that's her. The 1861 is the only census that states she was born in Ireland. 1851 states Dalmeny, all others have Crammond.
