Musselburgh Schools 1900s

Post by Pandabean » Wed Feb 10, 2010 12:43 pm

Does anyone know what schools would have been around in Musselburgh around the mid 1800s to the early 1900s. It would likely be a public school rather than private. Google doesnt seem to help except for point me to Loretto which is a private/boarding school.

Any helps would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks.
Andy

Hi Andy,
Searching on Ancestry for school* as part of the address in Civil Parish Inveresk in 1891, there are two schools that come up:

Loretto School
Windsor Park School

Loretto School seems to be the biggest and is residential. Lots of students given on the census.

Windsor Park School has only the headmaster and his family, an assistant teacher and some servants mentioned, so it was probably a day school.

So far not found any others, but "school" as part of the address may only give the sort of schools you don't want... But at least it got you one more name!

All the best,
Sarah

Later: Still trying, this time searching for anyone with occupation "teach*," there are 67 results, most of which don't give any indication of what school they are teaching in.

Jessie T Brown is an elementary teacher living at The School House Old Craighall, but the only other people with that address are a Pit Banksman Labr and his family...

In 1901 there is another school: New Street Newfield Boarding School

Jesse D Dunn is a teacher with address "Schoolhouse Cowpits" (great name! :D )

Hi again,
Wikipedia refers to the Musselburgh Grammar School, that is supposed to date from the 17th century.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musselburgh
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musselburgh_Grammar_School

From British History Online, under Musselburgh:

http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report ... mpid=43465

The grammar school of the burgh is under the patronage of the magistrates and town-council, who pay the master a salary of £27. 4. 5., and provide him with a good house. There are also, under the same patronage, an English school at Musselburgh, of which the master has a salary of £21, with good premises free; and another at Fisherrow, of which the master has a salary of £10, with a schoolroom and dwelling-house rent free.

Regards,
Sarah

Thank you Sarah but it seems it may be a worthless search. I have checked with the local archives and it is highly unlikely that any of the registers survive and I was recommended to contact the school on the off chance they may have that info. But I highly doubt it.

Thanks for the help. :)

Have you had a look at any old maps of the area?

http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/musselburgh_1.html [1850s]
reveals a Borough School off Smart's Wynd.
Not knowing Musselburgh well , I can only gather that it's around where Musselburgh Primary school is now.

Looking at the later map 1893 http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/musselburgh_2.html
confirms there was a school on Newbigging, that seems to be there still.

I don't have time to check the later map more closely just now [tea time the steak pie smells about cooked ;) ] but have a search yourself and see if another one springs up - I would have thought there would be one on the North /West side of the river too....
