When does Scottish records become public ?

Post by littaol » Fri Mar 05, 2010 7:06 pm

It is probably mentioned somewhere, but I cannot find it :)

In Norway baptisms and confirmations can be viewed when they are 80 years old.
Images of graves have no limits, while in Denmark they have to be more than 20 years before they are public.
Census records have to be 100 years, so we all wait for 1. december 2010, because the 1910 census is digitalized and will be released that day.

How is this regulated in Scotland ?

The FAQ section of Scotland's People gives the regulations;

Why are there restrictions on viewing Statutory images online?
Online access to images is restricted to those over 100 years old for births, 75 years for marriages and 50 years for deaths, in accordance with GROS policy, to protect the privacy of individuals. However, you can, if you wish, order an extract of a modern record online Find out more or by using the search facilty available at the General Register Office of Scotland at New Register House, Edinburgh.

I hope that helps, here on Talking Scot we try to abide by these guidelines too to prevent the details of living persons being posted on an open forum.

Hi LItta

How is this regulated in Scotland ?

In Scotland:
Census 100yr closure
Births 100yr closure on the internet, but can be viewed if you visit New Register House in person, or one of the other centres such as Park Circus in Glasgow or through a local registrar's office for a fee.
Marriages 75yr closure, but may be viewed as above.
Deaths 50yrs closure, but may be viewed as above.

See http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/conte ... x.aspx?211
and
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/conte ... x.aspx?101

I don't think there are any regulations with regard to graves and grave stones.

Best wishes
Lesley
