Just a quick note while I am skiving from work

Google maps appears to have been heavily updated. :) Should be useful for finding those places the rellies lived.

There was an article in the news earlier this week saying that more Scottish (probably English / Welsh / Northern Irish too) towns were being added to Google Maps street view.

I see Haddington is there now. On looking at my workplace, it looks like these images were made last summer.

Andy, I recall, you had a genealogical interest in West Road, Haddington. See http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&sourc ... 80.47,,0,5 .

All the best,

Falkirk is now there in all it's glory, and the Braes villages too.

The kids and I have just spent a good half hour going round the streets. We've narrowed the time frame to 9:30 or 10:30 am on a Thursday in early July! [bus times, coal lorry and the age of a baby at the bus stop...
and they think they've disguised people etc...... :-

Ooo Falkirk and Haddington are on it, I may be able to see my parents house on there at last.

I havent had time to check myself as I am in Norway this week for work, but could someone tell me it North Berwick is on there?

Haha Wilma, I reckon the my new house, the photo must have been taken in the late summer as the farmer has already got his hay rolls (not covered yet), or giant blackpuddings as I used to call them when I was a kid, and next door doesn't seem to have a driveway, which they have now. I cant get it down to the year yet but summer is a good enough guess. :D

Andrew - You have a good memory :) My Great XX Grandfather worked in the farm at Somerfield Mains for quite a while, at least 40 years according to the censuses. I think the farm house may still be there but modified, and I think that street is all big houses now. Seems the change happened between 1881 and the early 1900s.

When using google maps then i suggest you put in addresses whose location you already know.

I have found errors where for instance #15 is shown closer to where #19 is. Other known locations show a similar error.

They have even added Orkney =D> A very longed for wish for me, there is no street name for me to look for, as it is just farm names, but I have now toured a good part of South Ronaldsay and found loads of ancestors homes, I had to stop and zoom quite a bit for roadside markers, its just fantastic, I am a bit crossed eyed mind you

My beautiful Isle of Islay is now on googlemaps. I'm able to see all the houses my ancestors lived in.

If you zoom in the satellite image until all of Scotland shows and then 'dangle' the little yellow figure over the map you will see the blue areas which show which parts have been driven through and that shows that a huge section of Scotland has been covered.

I'd say nearly all (if not all) 'A' and 'B' roads are done and a lot of side streets in towns and villages across Scotland.

Frustratingly the one stretch of road in Dunoon near the pier which I did want to see had been missed. The bit either side of it is there :(
