Hi Anne H & Mary

Thank you both for the warm welcome. I'm relatively new to genealogy, and have only been researching for about a year or so, but have made some progress in tracing some of my family, unfortunately on my dad's side at the moment all roads seem to lead to Ireland or the Isles (Uig & Stornoway). My mum's side has been a little bit better, they all seem to originate from the Kilsyth area in Stirlingshire.

Again, thanks for the welcome and look forward to speaking to you again.

Talia.

Hi Talia,

Yes, I know what you mean about the Irish side of many of our families :?

Familysearch.com can be quite helpful on some of those records, but the loss of the Irish censuses is a great blow. I've managed to trace "missing" Scottish and English rellies with censuses, but my Antrim roots are stopped dead at 1822 :(

Yes, the Irish side for most of us can be very difficult. Three quarters of my ancestors are from Ireland and I think the best way for me to get anywhere would be to find a way to go over to Ireland and look through all the records to see if I get lucky. On the otherhand, half of my mother's side is Scottish, so I've been able to do well with all of them...so far.

I did get lucky with the family search pilot site - Irish BMD Index where I found three births for one Scottish family after searching for several years on and off on SP. Just proves that we should hang in there. :)

Anne H

Hi Talia,

I have had great success in tracing my family connections in Uig and Stornoway through the Hebridean Connection web site at:

http://www.hebrideanconnections.com/home.aspx

There are links to the local Historical Societies and for Uig it is:

http://www.ceuig.com/

I hope you have success with with your searches.

Regsrds,

Calum

Hi Anne & Mary

Went to the Mitchell and had a look for my dad's family in the poor law applications and found my G Grandfather had applied, it turns out that I have been searching for the wrong maiden name for my G Grandmother. I then searched on FamilySearch as suggested with the new name and have found their marriage in Co Tyrone. Now that I have this info I should be able to find out who their parents were.

Hi Calum, thanks very much for the links re Uig and Stornoway, I'll have a wee look at the sites this evening. I'll let you know how I get on.

Again, many thanks to you all for your help and suggestions they are very much appreciated.

Kind regards

Talia.
