World War One – Canadian Soldier’s Records.

To commemorate the 93rd anniversary of The Battle of Vimy Ridge, Ancestry.ca is offering free access to the ‘Canadian Soldiers of the First World War: 1914 – 1918’ collection from April 9th through April 12th, 2010.
Definitely worth a look if you had any male relatives of Military age in Canada at the time.

Is there any more information on Ancestry than there is on the free Collections Canada Site for WW1 soldiers?

Thanks Barb,
I didn’t realise the information was freely available elsewhere, maybe ancestry.ca didn’t either. If they did it seems a bit odd and maybe a little bit deceptive to be promoting something of that nature to entice potential customers.
All the best,
Alan

There is much stuff on ancestry available elsewhere (from Archives worldwide) - very little of it is available via ancestry without a subscription. The negotiations with the archives to have access to the data will often mean scanning is faster and/or access to Ancestry is provided free at the appropriate archives. (Ancestry, of course receives a benefit, else it wouldn't negotiate). To correspond to national events with what they have available is one way that they market their site - they often advertise "free days" - I really don't see it as deceptive or odd. They are obviously a large commercial organisation & are as honest as such an organisation has to be. They do, however make many aware of the existence of these archives and data sets (e.g. you didn't know it was available elsewhere) so there will be positive outcomes for some.
I do use ancestry alot at the minute, but try to be immune to their marketing buzz (unless it involves discount rates
