Calder Street, Coatbridge

Post by Andrew C. » Tue Apr 13, 2010 1:29 pm

I am interested in the address of 100 Calder Street, Greenend, Coatbridge in the 1920’s. I believe the property was known as Bond’s Building. Members of my family seem to be occupying at least two different properties there. I found it odd, if I am reading the certificates correctly, that they where in houses 100/j and 100/o. Is this not an unusual way of numbering a tenement property? Certainly for it to go up to ‘o’ would suggest 15 properties. I think 100 Calder Street was just after the R. B. Tennent’s works or on the opposite side of the road. If any one can point me in the direction of any references to the building or area from the 1920’s or earlier it would be appreciated.

Hi David,

I don't know anything about the building your looking for, but it doesn't sound unusual to me that there would be addresses going up to the letter 'o'. I've come across many of mine in different areas of Coatbridge with addresses going up to 't'.

If my memory serves me correctly, some of the tenements in the Coatbridge area were a continuous long row of houses where you usually gained entry through a close. Once through the close there was another equally long row that housed many more households, so I don't think it would be unusual that there would be high numbers/letters.

I'm talking well over fifty years ago, so the memory might be a bit out of whack.

Added: David, 100 Calder Street seems to be in the Whifflet section of Coatbridge, as is R.B. Tenants, rather than Greenend. It's viewable on Google street view as it appears today.

Regards,
Anne H

Thanks for that I wasn't sure where Greenend started and Whifflet finished. 100 Calder Street must have been where the new industrial units are near the little roundabout, can't remember what was in there before. I am guessing as you suggest it must have been quite densely packed housing. Looking at the certs again I have family at 100b, 100j and 100o.

Greetings from New Zealand.

May I suggest that you take a look at scotcities.com Gerry BLAIKIE's site. If I remember correctly when I GOOGLED him he appeared to be a Glasgow City official (re buildings) and I found him very aproachable and obliging when I asked for permission to reproduce some of his posted photos and maps.

I'm sure if he can, he will put you on the right track. Appreciates feed back about his site and excellent photos.

Regards,

Alan SHARP.
