Slave Registrations

Post by momat » Mon May 17, 2010 4:47 am

Came across this while searching Ancestry.
The name I was searching brought up a connection to
Slave Registers of former British Colony, BARBADOS
Doubt that it is of much use to Scottish Genealogy but an unusual link.

There's a chance that someone may strike it lucky there ... if a British subject was recorded as purchasing slaves, then it could identify one of "those" people [alien]

There is a list of around 60 Slaves (owned    ) by James Holligan Junk of Barbados in the Registers of Former British Colonial Dependancies 1812 -1834
with births from 1770s onwards.
There has to be a story out there about this :(

Hi Maureen,
The slave registers are very helpful for people who have slaves in their ancestry. Otherwise, pre-US Civil War genealogy is extremely difficult, since most records don't give the slaves' names, or if they do, it is usually first name only. It's like the trouble many of us have finding the identity and surnames of our female ancestors, only for the male ancestors as well. Every little bit helps!

All the best,
Sarah
