19th Century Newspapers Online

Post by nelmit » Fri May 28, 2010 9:44 am

I've been trying to get Culture and Sport Glasgow to add the 19th Century British Newspapers to their online services and need a bit of fuel.

I know more and more libraries are adding this to their catalogue and would like to compile a list of those before putting it to them again. So.......................Do you have access and is it from home or just the library/university? Full details please. :D

Regards,
Annette

Hello Annette,

Tell them that Glasgow is looking thoroughly neglected now that Aberdeen City and Dundee City have access from home. Glasgow is the only one of the three Scottish cities that has a newspaper on the 19C database which doesn’t give access to its citizens. Edinburgh doesn’t really count because its 19C newspaper coverage ends at 1868.

This is all I can offer off the top of my head. I think the English ones are County wide and accessible from home if I remember correctly. Tell them also that the Whole of Australia has free access to the 19C British newspapers and see if that makes them feel bad.

Hi Annette,

You can add West Yorkshire libraries to your list. I have just discovered I can access the online newspapers from home just by typing in my library card number!!!
Heaven :D
Searching for Barclay Aberdeenshire, Stewart Edinburgh, Brown Edinburgh & Uphall, Finlayson E Lothian, Fairley & Renton E & W Lothian for starters!

Hello Ken,

Is that the InfoTrac newspaper list? If so, I think they are only recent newspapers, over the last 10 years or so, if you’re lucky.

Here’s another Scottish Library that offers free online access to the 19C newspapers and to lots of other good stuff. You need to live in the area serviced by the library, you can apply online, but you may have to visit Edinburgh in person to collect your card.

See the ‘register for remote access’ links for details and for conditions etc. The number who can access the resource at any one time may be very limited at present but such things change with demand.

THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF SCOTLAND.

I hope I read that correctly,
Alan
