McGregor / Rough / Scott

Post by Troupman » Thu Aug 12, 2010 7:48 pm

Dear All

I am new to Talking Scot and would like to share a problem that I have encountered and hope that someone somewhere can provide the answer.

My ggg grandfather John McGregor (1802-1866) was a Lock Keeper on the Canal at Blackhill. His wife was Grace Rough who died (1846 -1851) before the census. John later married Flora McGillvary 1852, He was the father of 14 children 10 to Grace and 4 to Flora. The children of John and Grace were baptised at the "English Church" St Andrews by the Green in Glasgow .

I have lots of information on the family however here is the problem - in nearly all cases the certificates of the children at marriage and death confirm that the mother was Grace Rough. However two children no 5 Peter and No7 Thomas at marriage state their mother was Grace Scott. As the information would have been provided by Peter and Thomas they obviously believed their mother to be Grace Scott and not Rough. Furthermore I can't find any other information on Grace Rough in terms of BIrth or Marriage.

What reasons could there be for this mystery over surnames.

Just in case listers may recognise the family I will provide details of the Children

JANE McGREGOR married 1 John Wilson and 2 James Laurie
MARY McGREGOR married Daniel Cunningham
JOHN McGREGOR married Barbara Houston
ISABELLA McGREGOR; Born 1833. Unmarried.
PETER McGREGOR married Mary Ann Johnston States Mother Grace Scott
ELIZA McGREGOR; Unmarried
THOIMAS McGREGOR married Jane Pearson states Mother Grace Scott
JANET McGREGOR unmarried
HUGH McGREGOR married Annie Humphries
James McGREGOR married Margaret Henderson

John and Flora McGilvary had the following children
Margaret, Donald, Angus and Neil

Any suggestions or site of a possible birth of Grace Rough would be welcome or information on this family would be appreciated.

Many thanks in advance

Robert

Hello Robert,

If I have this right maybe :D :?

Here is the family in 1841 from FREECEN -

Piece: SCT1841/622 Place: Barony -Lanarkshire Enumeration District: 11
Civil Parish: Barony Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 213 Page: 17
Address: Blackhill

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
MCGREGOR John M 30 Labourer Lanarkshire
MCGREGOR Grace F 25 Lanarkshire
MCGREGOR Jane F 14 Lanarkshire
MCGREGOR Mary F 12 Lanarkshire
MCGREGOR John M 10 Lanarkshire
MCGREGOR Isabella F 8 Lanarkshire
MCGREGOR Peter M 6 Lanarkshire
MCGREGOR Eliza F 6 Lanarkshire
MCGREGOR Thomas M 2 Lanarkshire
MCGREGOR Janet F 7m Lanarkshire

A look at the original is needed to confirm the ages of John and Grace.

And, going by the children, in 1851 at Blackhill which I'm sure you'll have -

John Mcgregor 48 Labourer born Barony
Thomas Mcgregor 12
Jessie Mcgregor 10
Hugh Mcgregor 8
James Mcgregor 5
John Cross 25

and 1861 -

John Mcgregor 60 born Eaglesham :?
Flora Mcgregor 40
Hugh Mcgregor 16
James Mcgregor 14
Margaret Mcgregor 7
Donald Mcgregor 5
Angus Mcgregor 3

There is a marriage indexed for -

JOHN MACGREGOR

Marriages:
Spouse: GRIZEL SCOTT
Marriage:
15 DEC 1810 Dull, Perth, Scotland

Not quite sure where this is taking us at the moment but definitely food for thought. :?

Regards,
Annette

Annette

Thank you for taking the time to provide the information. I already knew the census details and had even considered the John McGregor and Grizzel Scott Marriage however it occurred in 1810 and John was born in 1802 so it can't be him (or can it be the case of the 8 year old groom)

Jane The eldest child of the marriage of John McGregor and Grace Rough is my direct ancestor and at her death her mother is listed as Grace Rough however she was born in 1826 and Grace at 25 in 1841 even accounting for the rounding down is on the borders of being almost too young to be her mother, but one never knows. Why Thomas and Peter both consistently state Grace Scott is puzzling - for one to get the name wrong is possible but for two to both get it wrong and to state the same wrong name leads me to believe that there is something there that could provide a clue to the family.

Grace is my block as I have no idea about her other than the 1841 census record which tells me very little.

I do appreciate your effort to help if you come up with any theories I would be pleased to hear them as I am at a total loss on this - not getting Grace's birth or knowing where she was born stops that line of research completely.

Many Thanks

Robert
