Drowning death at Lock 16 in 1889.

Post by rhyddid » Sat Aug 14, 2010 2:35 am

Hello everyone,
My great grandmother's brother George Hogg drowned at Lock 16 on the Forth & Clyde Canal, Falkirk, on the 29th June 1889 aged 9.
I'm wondering if it would've been reported in a newspaper and if so, which paper?
Thanks for any advice.
Debbie.

There is a very brief report in the Scotsman 1 July (with mistake in name):
DROWNED IN THE CANAL.—Yesterday morning the body of John Hogg, 10 years of age, son of a foreman surfaceman, residing near Camelon, was found in the canal there.

It’s almost exactly the same in the Aberdeen Weekly Journal on Tuesday 2nd.
“On Sunday morning the body of John Hogg etc.”

The local paper should be the Falkirk Herald.

I don't see an archive look-up section there. You could try dropping them an e-mail.

Or contact Falkirk Library. They hold archives of the Falkirk Herald.
