Loch Lomond Steamers

Post by kennethm » Mon Sep 27, 2010 11:51 pm

I visited the Maid of the Loch paddle steamer recently and decided to do a bit of research about the paddle steamers that sailed on Loch Lomond. The research has been fascinating and have found a lot of various interesting pieces of information. The first cruise was in 1818; Maid of the Loch was the last paddle steamer to be built in Great Britain.

Amongst other things Jules Vernes visited Scotland in 1859 and sailed up Loch Lomond as did Hans Christian Andersen in August 1847. There were royal visitors too including Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1849 and Queen Victoria with Princesses Louise and Beatrice in September 1869. Empress Eugénie of France toured the Loch as well in 1860. Apparently Queen Victoria and Prince Albert took a trip on the Loch in 1847 from Dumbarton but wondered if anyone would know if this is correct and are there any accounts or newspaper articles from the time to confirm this?

Queen Salote of Tonga also took a royal trip on Loch Lomond on 22 June 1953 after attending the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Does anyone remember seeing or hearing about her visit or know of any photographs from her visit to Maid of the Loch?

Here's a link to the article on Geograph that I've compiled.

Great stuff Kenneth, as usual.

The first Glasgow Herald edition after the 1847 Royal Visit was August 20th. The visit is covered in two parts and in great detail. The text is very fuzzy and you probably won’t find it using the search facility.

Go to the newspapers via this post. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=15443

Click on the “Browse publications by location” link at the top to get to the GH for 20 August, 1847.

It looks like they got as far as Dumbarton and then turned around and went back the way they had come. The remainder of the visit to Scotland is detailed but I’m not familiar with the territory.

If you can’t get to the item please let me know and I’ll figure something out.

All the best,
Alan

Thanks Alan. That's a great help as always.

It appears from the account of the Royal Tour in The Glasgow Herald edition of 20th August 1847 that the Royal party visited Dumbarton but didn't make the trip to Loch Lomond on this occassion. It wasn't till 17th August 1849 on a cruise up Loch Long on the Royal Yacht, that Prince Albert made the journey from Arrochar to Tarbet for a trip on The Waterwitch. Queen Victoria, who didn't accompany Prince Albert on the earlier trip because "it poured with rain most hopelessly", returned in 1869 accompanied by her two daughters Princess Louise and Beatrice for a cruise on the P.S. Prince Consort.

Best,

Kenneth
