What Bugs you?

Post by wini » Fri Nov 19, 2010 11:18 am

The most frustrating thing for me is dead ends.
From a certain point forward they are in every Census, Deaths, Marriages so I assume they are conscientious about filling in returns etc, but no Births. One came from Ireland so that is understandable but the one from Skye should be in the OPR,s but no success .I will just keep plugging away and hopefully success will come

My current Bug, it changes over time :? , but this one has been fairly consistent for the past year or so, is the cut-off date of 1901 for downloading of Wills and Testaments from Scotlands People.

I've found them a very useful tool in building up a family back story, for instance who has been left out off legacies, where the money has been invested, property that they've owned (The actual property is not listed as part of the legacy but what is listed is rents due from tennants of such property).
I'm not sure but I might be thinking there was a plan to digitise the transcribed summaries as listed in the Books of Session & Council from 1901 to some unspecified date. I would reckon that I should (?) have 4 maybe 5 that should be listed between 1901 and 1911 which would a boon to finding out more about folk a little closer to today.

Does anyone know if the digitizing will take place and if they will be available in the usual place.

I can nip into Scotlands People centre on Prince's St. but I like to transcribe the whole thing from an image on the screen.
I'd like to be apathetic but I really can't be bothered.

Looking for blacksheep & not finding any with
Groats & Stevensons in Orkney, Hood's in Dundee/Angus, Mclaren's in Clackmannan and Jolly's in Kincardineshire. There may be more!

100 year rule on census information. It is unlikely that I will find my father-in-law whereabouts, in the UK, in my lifetime just because they will not release the census information for 1921,31 or the 1939 mini census. :x

Hi Alcluith,

You may be able to request info from the 1939 register:

I would agree with Alcluith.

For a government to be keeping an alleged promise to year 1921 householders, 99% of whom would have expired before about 1985, is the sort of thing that would be too fantastic even for science fiction, especially considering the way in which governments usually keep promises to the living. The fact that there is legislation is never a problem in any other circumstance.

I wonder how many people have actually seen their own name on a UK census document and weren’t past caring. Such as a 100 year old active genealogist who could actually say “that’s me”.

Alan.

I disagree. A firm commitment was given (at least in Scotland) that census information would not be released for 100 years.

If this time span does not make sense, then it should be changed. But not retrospectively.

The strength of a promise should not be devalued.

I'm with Hibee & with so much info that such Censuses could give me so tempting to disagree but the rule was made & the promise given.
I was a Cenus Enumerator for the 1980 Census & one of the things that many people asked was
"Will people I know or my family be able to have this information"?
I gave my word that the information would be held for a hundred years-even then a few were worried about Grandchildren & Great-Grandchildren knowing "secrets".Most of which they wouldn't give two hoots about nowadays.
Our word was given & so it must remain.

Sons and Daughters who don't know their Grandparents full names. Its an easy bit of family history to teach them. You don't have to be so morbid as to tell them they will need to know it when they report your death, but they should know it nevertheless. Not everyone has loads of cousins around from both sides and familiar with the family names. But all the kiddies can know their granny and pops first and last names, even if they have passed.
It will enrich their lives, and make things easier for our research :P

Cathy, who knew the names of all her grandmothers husbands even when she was little and wasn't supposed to.

People who, having living within a mile of where they were born for all their lives, don't seem to manage to get their deaths registered. Perhaps it's just my family but I seem to have a lot of missing deaths well after 1855. :?
