Find My Past

Post by garibaldired » Sat Jan 22, 2011 8:06 pm

I had an email this morning from Find My Past which said that during 2011 they would be adding the Scottish censuses 1841 - 1901 to their site.
Presumably this means the images not just transcriptions and that they will be available by subscription?

Is this news or have I missed something previously?

I'd be surprised if the current owners of the IPRs to the images would share them out.

I would have guessed if their Scottish censuses were to include images that they would have said so in their publicity, as it would be a first to have digital images of these other than GROS (in the SP Centre, New Register House, and some registrar's offices) and ScotlandsPeople (online).

I may be wrong, but that's how it reads to me.

As Find My Past are owned by BrightSolid, I'd not be surprised to see the images.

Or to start a conspiracy - maybe Scotlands People and Find My Past sites will begin to merge?

GROS has in the past refused to consider allowing Ancestry or any similar organisation access to the census images. SP is a setup in which GROS is one of the partners and that’s why the images are there. The sudden appearance of images on a site run by BS alone could suggest to some that BS is the tail that wags the SP dog. If there has been an arrangement for release of images then any announcement should come from both BS-FMP and GROS, and not just one of them.

Because of draconian provisions in a mediaeval relict called Crown Copyright, GROS has control over the use of the census images until Hell Freezes Over. Hopefully Crown Copyright will be included in this review http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-11695416

As far as I know neither GROS nor SP have any census transcriptions to offer, just the index. The only transcription on SP is the 1881 done by volunteers of the LDS Church. If BS have census transcriptions for FMP then it would be useful if they added them to the SP site. It would improve the site and meet their accessibility obligations to the blind who are forced to use screen readers and who have no way of reading the information on images.

That’s as far as I know,
All the best,
Alan
