Looking at a marriage by " Sheriff's Warrant between George Kemp and Christina Livingstone 1st February 1900.
The place of marriage appears to read " No 12 Society, Chambers Street, Edinburgh. Anyone any idea what this place was ?.
Also wondered if anyone knows under what circumstances a marriage took place this way?
Any help much appreciated
Frances

Hi Frances
12 Chambers Street was (is?) part of the University of Edinburgh buildings. Possibly the Students' Union, or Society, at the time.

Hi Hibee,
Thought it would be round about there, but couldn't make the connection between the two people getting married and that particular address

. George was a cooper and Christina was a millworker.
Thanks for info anyway.

Hi Frances
I had some staying at No 11 in 1860 and at that time it was described as No 11 Society, Brown Square.

According to the 1894 OS map, Society was the area behind the buildings fronting Chambers Street and George IV Bridge, where the modern part of the museum (Museum of Scotland) stands now.

On this map, Society is shown in the north-east corner, Chambers Street is just off the map to the north of that corner.
All the best,

Brown Square was at the western end of what is now Chambers Street, and was largely demolished in the construction of that street.

All that remained was Brown Square House (shown on the map as George Heriot's Hospital School). This became the Students' Union for Heriot Watt University (I knew it intimately) until it was demolished to make way for the new Museum building, in the 1970s.
So, we are talking about the western end of Chambers Street, and not the area primarily connected with Edinburgh University, as I had previously thought.
