Drowning at Blantyre Suspension Bridge

Post by maggiehill » Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:43 pm

An ancestor of mine, Daniel Turley was found drowned on the 6th April 1883 in the river Clyde close to the Blantyre Suspension Bridge on the Bothwell side. He was last seen on 18 February 1883, he was 27 years old.

I assume this was reported in a local newspaper could you inform me which one please.

Hi Maggie

The same fate befell my gg-grandfather, nearby, in 1874. It was reported in the Hamilton Advertiser.

I viewed this at the main library in Hamilton. Doubt it's available online.

Hello Maggie,

From 19C British Library Newspapers.

Glasgow Herald, Monday, April 9, 1883
HAMILTON.--BODY IDENTIFIED.--The body of the man found on Friday near the Suspension Bridge, Blantyre works, has been identified as Daniel Turley, miner, Kirkfieldbank, Lesmahagow. He was in Lanark on Saturday, 17th February, and was last seen going through Kirkfieldbank, near which runs the Clyde, at half-past 12 on Sunday morning. Deceased was 30 years of age and a single man.

Glasgow Herald, Monday, April 9, 1883
BLANTYRE.--BODY IDENTIFIED.--The body found in the Clyde, near the Suspension Bridge, at Blantyre works, has been identified as that of Daniel Turley, miner, Kirkfieldbank, Lesmahagow. Deceased, who was 30 years of age and unmarried, had been spending the night of Saturday, 17th February, in Lanark, and he was last seen about half-past twelve on the morning of Sunday the 18th the worse for drink in Kirkfieldbank, which is near to the Clyde.

It's also in the Google News Archive copy of the Glasgow Herald for the same date but in a different position again. There must have been several editions printed that day. See page 6, towards the bottom of sixth column. It's very blurred but is identical to the first one above. http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=G ... =frontpage

All the best,
Alan

Thanks Hibee and Alan

I assumed he was under the influence, next time I go home I will visit the main library in Hamilton. I wish the copy of the article on the net was of better quality

The link to Essex libraries looks interesting as I will now search for another Turley drowning in Lesmahagow. It was my Grandfathers twin brother William Turley age 5 who went through the ice on the river Nethan Lesmahagow on 6 February 1886.

Hello Maggie,

Here’s the other one.

Glasgow Herald, Tuesday, February 9, 1886
LESMAHAGOW.—BOY DROWNED.—On Saturday afternoon, two boys, twin brothers, about five years of age, named Turley, residing with their parents in Turfholm, fell through the ice on Nethan, and one of them was drowned. An older brother managed to get one of them out not much the worse of the immersion, but the other was carried away by the current under the ice and was not recovered for about ten minutes, when life was extinct. The accident occurred a short distance above Turfholm Bridge.

Also in Google News Archive, same newspaper and date, page 4, column 8, and much easier on the eyes than the other one.

The images in the 19C newspapers are ok. While you’re waiting for your Library card try going down this track. I think it still works. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=15443&hilit=

All the best,
Alan

Hello Alan

Thanks for giving m the information, the Essex link still works so I have downloaded both drownings.

What phase do you put in the search to find these items as I always have problems and have to go through each newspaper till I find what I want. I have been trying to find for years now if there were any newspaper articles for a Sea Captain (probably named Lando) enquiring the where abouts of my ancestor John Lando who went to Biggar when he first arrived in Scotland in 1850. John Lando was living at West Linton at the time. The Captain was in Biggar according to family tales between probably 1890 and 1900.

Thanks again

Maggie

Hi Maggie

There are 4 John Landos in Scotland in the 1891 Census. None in Biggar, but 2 are in St Rollux, which is also Lanarkshire.

Hello Maggie,

The search for the two drownings was fairly straight forward. I just narrowed it down to the Glasgow Herald by clicking ‘Browse Publication Title’ find the newspaper, tick the box and then submit and search for Turley. Even without narrowing down the search period there are only about 120 results. It’s just a matter of fast-forwarding to the one you want, click the article title, and the name should be highlighted. That’s easier said than done if you don’t have a date to work on or a relatively uncommon name.

I remember Captain Lando from your earlier thread. It looks like we didn’t get very far that time either. viewtopic.php?f=35&t=14206&hilit=

All the best,
Alan

Hello Alan

I have been searching the Glasgow Herald with no luck to date, next time I am in Scotland I will look at the more local newspapers.

Still searching for Captain Lando, Stavanger Museum sent me copies of there records, trouble is they are printed versions and have him down as Sando, the Lloyds Register have him as Lando. This Captain Lando was in a collision near Breaksea Point, Cardiff on 25.11.99. I am awaiting any further info re Crew List and Captains Certificate for his Barge Edith and or the Crew List.
I have the Crew List for the Austerlitz with Captain Giovanni Lando born Genoa in charge, I even put an enquiry on the Genoa Forum and had to get entry translated. The only information I obtained was that John is the same as Giovanni.

I will keep searching for him.

Regards

Maggie
