Hello Isabel
Cheers,
Sarah
P.S. Also, where is Martha Rossini living in 1841? I don't see her.
Can anyone tell me what a "beach man" is so I can judge whether the various Davids one sees are likely to be the same one? Is it something to do with boats, or what?Isabel wrote:dont know anything about david except that at time of marriage he was a beach man

Hi Sarah:
No luck in finding 'beachman' as an occupation or in a Scots language dictionary
http://www.dsl.ac.uk/Beach-boys, boys employed at the fishing-stations to assist in curing fish on the stone beaches.

Beadman: Licensed beggar
Beidman Bead(s)man: one living in an almshouse; pauper, beggar

Thanks, Frances
I like the fish curing one. Seems I saw some fisher-folk when I was looking at David Smiths earlier this evening.
Regards,
Sarah

Re: HELP please stuck on smith
Hello there,
It seems that Beachmen were boatmen who worked off the beach, doing whatever was available that suited their skills, salvage, rescue, ferrying whatever from ship to shore. It sounds like it could have been dangerous. http://www.gtyarmouth.co.uk/Bygones/Mar ... achmen.htm
There’s a sad story here about a couple of Whalers called the Dee and the Thomas. The Dee eventually made it back home with the few survivors of both crews, over 40 had died. There was a man called David Smith on board the Thomas, and according to The Aberdeen Journal, Wednesday, May 10, 1837, he died on April 3rd. The Dee appears to have been of Aberdeen and the Thomas of Dundee, and probably no connection. http://books.google.com.au/books?id=5Io ... 22&f=false

Re: HELP please stuck on smith
Hello Isabel,
Just looking at the IGI for David Smith born Scotland 1800 +/- 5, there are 584 of them, and more than a third of those are from Angus. All we know about your David Smith is that he was in Glasgow in mid 1830s. There’s really nothing to indicate whether he was ever in Dundee or if he was the one who died on the Thomas.
This “Sailor’s Word Book” from 1867, defines Beach-Man as a person on the coast of Africa who acts as an interpreter to Shipmasters etc. but also has Beach-Men as boatmen and those who land people through a heavy surf. http://books.google.com.au/books?id=y7H ... 22&f=false
I guess you wouldn’t get a lot of heavy surf in Glasgow and that might make you think he was from elsewhere. But maybe there were areas not far away where he was needed to ferry whatever from boats to the shore where the water was often rough enough to justify the title. I don’t know enough about the geography etc of the area to say.
I had a quick look at the 41 & 51 on FreeCen and unless I did something wrong, the Beachman occupation doesn’t seem to occur anywhere.
All the best,
Alan
