Does anyone know how streets were numbered in the Gorbals in the 1890s? That is, were the even numbers on the west or east of streets that ran north and south?
Thanks, Ketzel

Re: Gorbals street numbering
Hello Ketzel,
Street numbering in Glasgow has been covered in an earlier thread viewtopic.php?f=1&t=14656&hilit=numberi ... 15#p120114
Street numbering methods seem to have been firmly established in Glasgow by the 1890s and assuming the North, South, East, West, thing was then consistent and workable there wouldn’t have been much point in creating turmoil by changing it all. It was probably then what it is now, whatever that is?
If you have a particular street in mind the Glasgow directories at the Internet Archive may be useful. They have a street section with numbers that may provide clues. This tool is useful http://bizdirs.from-mt.com/glasgow/
Hope that helps,
Alan
PS
Also see the 1927 directory which appears to have cross streets http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... x-glas.htm

Re: Gorbals street numbering
Odd numbers are always on the left and evens on the right going away from the city centre main roads (in Glasgow's case I think it's the Tolbooth). So if you're heading south in The Gorbals the odds are on your left.
For your ancestors from 'The Briggait' the low numbers start at The Saltmarket end with the odds on your left.
Regards,
Annette

Re: Gorbals street numbering
Hi Alan and Annette,
Thanks very much for your help. I knew we'd discussed numbering earlier when I was investigating my Briggait ancestors, but wasn't sure the system applied to the Gorbals, and couldn't find the thread when I did a search.
I hadn't known that the city directories are online. Very useful!
