NLS maps and dates

Post by LesleyB » Thu Apr 14, 2011 11:23 pm

I know it is probably really obvious and I'm just missing it.... but I'd appreciate some input on this as it has puzzled me for a while...
on the NLS site maps; OS series, 6 inch to the mile.
http://geo.nls.uk/os6inch/
Search for a county, parish and placename. The place appears on the old (1920s) map, zoom in to view in more detail in the older OS maps. So far so good. Along the top when zoomed in it says:
"Six Inch 1840-1880s maps, zoom out to display small scale 1920s map."

OK - but how am I supposed to know what particular year the map I am looking at refers to? 1840s-1880s is quite a large range. I'd like to know WHAT particular year I am looking at - if a house is there in 1840, that is of interest, or if the house did not appear until say, 1880, then that is also of interest to me. Am I missing the blinking obvious re. the date??

After a rummage, I've found this list:
http://maps.nls.uk/os/6inch/county_list.html
which appears to give dates for the 6 inch to the mile maps, so for Fife for instance dates would be:
http://maps.nls.uk/os/6inch/fife.html
...and if you can see particular houses quite clearly then it is likely the 6 inch to the mile maps you are looking at, so inbetween 1853-56 would be likely. You coudl be more accurate by tracking down the sheet number.
But surely there is a better way to find out than this rather round-a-bout route?
