Ann Collins/Gibson (m/s Filson)

One of my (many) “Brick-walls”. For years I’ve been trying to find the birth/ death and marriages of this lady. Her first sighting is:

1881 census Dalmellington: John Filson (misspelled Fowlson, my great grandfather) had a visitor, Ann Gibson, age 38, Solicitors wife, born in Ireland.

1891 census Dalmellington: my great-great grandmother, Helen Filson (John's Mother) is with 2 young fellows, James Collins (Head), age 22, b. Ireland and William Gibson, Brother-in-law, age 17, American (British subject), Helen is listed as Grandmother. I believe these two fellows are “Half brothers”, not “brother-in-laws”.

Death 1940 James Collins: Airdrie. Father; James Collins, Seaman (Merchant service, deceased). Mother, Annie Collins (Deceased), subsequently Gibson, m/s Philson (I’ve seen a few occurrences where Filson has been misspelled as Philson).

Death 1947 William Gibson: Dalmellington. Father; William Gibson, Solicitor (Deceased), “Mother” listed as Anne Gibson m/s Filson (Deceased). William jr. never married, I haven't been able to find him on the 1901 or 1911 census, I've looked at a number of possibilities, but none are him. I was hoping that his Mother Ann/Anne/Annie might have been with him on one of these censuses.

Who is Ann/Anne/Annie Filson?? I suspect a sister of John Filson, daughter of Helen Filson, but I've never found anything else on her, no birth, death, marriage, immigration, nothing.

I’m hoping a fresh set of eyes can see something I’ve missed.

Hi Jean,

What I now know about Ann:

Information from 1881 census and from her two son’s deaths, she was born in Ireland.

She had been married twice, to a James Collins (probably in Ireland) and to a William Gibson.

She died sometime between 1881 and 1892 (son James Collins marriage).

I should have know that his Mother was deceased from a previous thread (Census Ellen Farrell, page 13) I’m not able to figure out how to get the URL link to work.

I now have William Gibson 1901 census.
